My friends who are newlyweds want to start playing golf but don't have any equipment. The guy is about 5'9" and the girl is even at 5'. I think I can find a decent set for the guy but the girl is on the short side so I have no clue. They aren't looking to spend a lot of money since getting married costs a hefty amount lately. Any suggestions on what to do?

For an inexpensive entry level set, you might take a look at Target, even online. They could both get outfitted for less than $400-500 depending. Unless they want to go used...

You are going to laugh at me, but if you go to Big 5 Sports or even Wal-Mart you can buy a full set of clubs with a good stand bag for $150. There are lots of different kits out there. My set (John Daly Gold) included a driver, 3-wood, 3 and 4 hybrid, and 5-PW irons, headcovers, as well as the stand bag. They fit my 5'11" frame perfectly and are excellent quality for the money.

I hate buying stuff that I know is Made In China but I couldn't stomach buying a pawn shop set of clubs, or spending a lot of money on basic name-brand stuff.

It's not junky stuff, it really is good quality, I am not afraid to walk on the golf course with it. I think anybody can afford $150 even with today's economy. I have even seen several sets of women's clubs for the lady.

I would suggest checking local pro shops for used club sets. Most place will cut shafts down to fit for the cost of the replacement grips only...so $50-70 on top of the club cost gets you fitted.

Getting a complete club set from Wilson, Affinity, or Dunlop that has a bag with all the club types already included is a pretty good idea for a starter. Those can be cut too, all together you get a bag with a complete club set for under $350 cut to height...you can't beat that deal.
