I am very new to the game and have only played a few rounds of golf over the past year but I have really enjoyed playing what I have gotten to so far. I have an old hand me down set of Wilson's that my dad used for a few years and even in my inexperience I can tell they are holding me back.

I was just looking for some general advice on what my new set should consist of from you guys that know considerably more than I do. I have been looking at the Nike Sumo2 system (5900 driver and hybrid irons set) but I noticed that not many of you are using Nike equipment. Thanks for your help in advance!

Driver: G10 10.5 V2 Stiff

How do you feel your clubs are holding you back? My first set of new irons that werent hand-me-downs where the Nike NDS irons. I dont think they are retailed anymore but I feel they are a good go-between club for learning golfers. Forgiving enough not to get frustrated with the game, but also unforgiving enough not to mask your swing faults so that you can identify them. Matter of fact I still play those irons durning the winter because of the uniflex shafts that came with them.

As far as holding me back, they are not in the least bit forgiving. If I am off center by even the slightest I have a ball that will either fall like a brick or just decide the ground is the best place to be

It could also be a blessing though. If you can figure out how to hit your "old rustys" well imagine how awesome you will be with modern equipment!

Oh yeah you should see my dad's face when I hit right into the green with a $15 hybrid I got from walmart and he loses 5 strokes to the water with his fancy callaways :)

I'm sure that Nike equipment is just fine.

This place is Titleist obsessed but I manage to ignore them.

I find it a little bit expensive for a starting set, but if you've got the money and like them go for it. In my opinion, you should look for something a little bit more for "your game", maybe Nike Ignites or maybe some Adam's complete sets which are quite nice....

You haven't even developed a consistent swing to get fitted I guess, but still if you are planning to spend SO MUCH in equipment to start off, you better get yourself fitted anyway. I don't know if you are sure even what your swing speed is, or know if a regular, stiff or x-stiff shaft is correct for you...

I agree it is a lot to spend, thats why I was kinda looking at last years models as well (such as just a slingshot OSS irons set and just a regular Nike Sumo 460cc Driver) that would save me a bit of money. But on the other hand I didn't want to buy equipment that I would have to replace in a year.

I suggest buying some Nickent Ironwoods (hybrids). Dick's sporting goods had them on clearance for about $50 per club. Bought a 4 and 3 and they are so easy to hit it's amazing. They are my favorite clubs in my bag --- bar none.

I could get the Standard 460cc Sumo Driver with the Nike OSS Slingshot Irons and the same Ignite Putter for $500 on ebay... That would probably be a better choice for me as a beginner and then just upgrade as I need to over the next few years

To be honest with you, you need to stop worrying so much about the brand. Any brand will do, such as Nickent, Golden Bear (my fav. beginner set = GX2), etc. You don't need top of the line clubs as a beginner. As a beginner, you should probably spend <$300.

Well, the reason I am looking to upgrade is two fold,

One, I feel like I have "done my time" with my old set for a year or so, and I will be golfing in the business world almost on a weekly basis in 3 weeks so I will need to have some respectable clubs in my bag.

As a fellow semi-newb, I will say the slingshot oss irons are a good choice (i have seen them as low as $299 new now). I will strongly suggest you rethink your driver options. I started out with last years sumo and driving was the weakest part of my game. Everyone would want to try that driver when I was on the course and very few could hit it right.

A few weeks ago I picked up an older titleist driver (the 975D). I am no titleist lover but since I bought it my drives go a little further and much straighter. My mishits get popped up but at least its 100 yards forward instead of 50 yards into the woods.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
