I was wondering if there are any clubs out there that feel great when you hit the ball cleanly, but aren't as punishing as blades.

Are the MP-57's like this? Or am I mistaken?

I want to lower my handicap and my current irons just aren't cutting it anymore.

I want a set that feels good on flush hits, but lets me know when I screw up as well, but still advances the ball.

I have never hit the

MP-57's but I play the MP-60 and I started playing them about a year ago for the same reason you are looking for...I wanted to know when I did not strike the ball the way I wanted to and I have been going through a swing change for about 6 months now (working with a Pro) and these sticks help me alot...when I am hitting the ball "pure" there is no better felling (like butter ) but when I make my old swing or "not pure" I know it as I loose some distance and if the swing is bad enough I feel it in my hands. I have never hit true blades either but I think the MP-57 or MP-60 will give you what your looking for...hope this helps...

I have the Titlest AP-2's and they have very good feel. You really need to go hit some different clubs and see what you like. I chose the Titlest because I liked the feel and the way they looked at address. There were other clubs that felt just as good but they are what I ended up with. There are a lot of good clubs out there.

The MP-57 are the first forged, full cavity back that Mizuno has produced. It is very forgiving and you will get some feedback.

The MP-60, as another poster noted, is similar to the MP-57 but is not a full cavity. It will give you more feeback than the 57 and the head is slightly smaller (thinner topline, too)

How much feedback are you looking for? Do you want to feel that you've hit a bad shot? Or do you want to feel that you've hit a bad shot off the toe? How specific?

I am going to try the reds, I demo'd the golds and really didn't like them, nothing felt solid.

I do like the look of mizunos, ill probably be demoing the 57's or 60's soon, as well as CG REDS.

I currently own titleist blades and I can tell you that when I hit them they are amazing BUT they are extremely unforgiving as you noted. I have hit quite a few clubs in the last few years, and if you are looking for a SOFT feeling club you need to go with Mizunos. I am currently looking into switching to Mizuno's myself due to the soft feel. They have a few different models so what you need to do is go try each out, because it really does depend on your ability level. All in all I ould recomend Mizuno's though, and that's coming from someone that currently owns Titleist 680s.

I honestly don't have a bias towards one manufacturer over another. I literally have an Odyssey putter, Mizuno Driver, Cleveland wedges, Nickent hybrids and MacGregor Irons. My rule is I play the clubs that get me the lowest score.

I own tons of equipment (especially irons) and find myself switching back and forth to see what happens. Here is what happens - every time I end up hitting MacGregor M565s with Rifle Shafts. These are the best of both worlds. They are forged cavity backs with some player improvement features.

I'm not sure why I don't see more MacGregor equipment out on the course. Over the past few years, they really are offering technology and equipment second to none.

These irons are dead accurate and they are long. I know they are long because they have strong lofts, but it is more than that. When I hit them right, they are a full club longer than any other iron I hit with. I also like the fact the high irons (7-PW) have a lower trajectory, while the low irons fly higher. It's is a combination of different metals and shaft flex points.

Last week, I taped up every box of irons and I stated publicly that these irons are staying in my bag. Everyone laughed. In addition, I also own a set of these in stiff graphite from YS technologies. They are awesome and I started using them due to pain in my hands and elbow.

I wouldn't say they feel like blades (played KZGs), but I think that is a good thing. I am almost 48 and my hands and elbow can't take the beating off center blades give. They are better than blades for virtually everyone - including the pros. Almost nobody on tour plays blades anymore. That's because other players are shooting lower with some type of forged cavity backs.

While some players have made a switch, the top players still use blades:

Phil Mickelson, KJ Choi, Paul Casey, Tiger Woods, Ernie Els, Sergio Garcia, Justin Rose, Vijay Singh, Lorena Ochoa, Annika, etc.

I hear you, but some of the players you noted have already removed blades for their low irons (3-6). Just like "wooden woods", blade use will continue to decline. There will always be rare exceptions, but the kids are growing up with blades, and they won't be using them when they are pros.

Ten years from now, a complete set of blades will no longer exist. Look at the pros that are now using hybrids. Who would have guessed that 10 years ago. Is there any doubt in your mind, that the person submitting this post should be playing blades of cavity backs?

Respectfully, I disagree. All those I listed are still using blades for their entire set. At Titleist, 30 out of their 60 players are still using blades. At Cobra, Geoff Ogilvy and Ian Poulter are using blades. (All of them are using blades for the entire set) Today's blades are not like the blades made 10 or 15 years ago. Back then, many tour players had to actually pick out heads. Today, everything is computerized and they are a better quality. I noticed you're a MacGregor enthusiast. The blade they offer in the V Foil Series is really soft and forgiving. (Quite honestly, moreso than a Taylormade Cavity that I used to own) Personally, I think blades get a bit of a bad rep, especially because of appearance. People see a MuscleBack and automatically assume they can't hit them. I guess it's psychological.

I have heard that the Nike CCi casts are really nice and people who have tested them don't notice much of a difference between them and the forged model. And they feel nice and smooth on properly hit shots and gives you the feedback when you don't. And because they have just discontinued them to only go with the forged model you can get a set of irons for like 300 - 400 bucks instead of 800! I just got mine and can't wait to get out on the course with them if it stops raining!!

Which is why I think so much of golf is mental. Riddle me this: You have a lower handicap than I do, but you're adding a set of cavity backs and I'm just getting rid of a set. I actually have the CCi's as well. I replaced them with blades and I could not be happier. I really don't notice much of a difference in forgiveness. If anything, the blades fly better on off-center hits than the Nike's do. The Nike's always gave me a bunch of trouble and now I feel that I'm a better player after making the switch.

Like someone said earlier, blades get a bad rep because of how they were 10-15 years ago. Technology has advanced and don't think that it left blades behind. Just like hybrids, movable weight technology, interchangeable shafts and heads, the entire game is evolving. That's how sports are. They change with the times. I don't think blades are as hard to hit as they used to be. Granted, this is my experience and everyone will have their own, but they just didn't do it for me. Good luck with them, though. They're great clubs.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
