Hey guys and girls, Just wondering if anyone has experimented with an old driver head and put a new shaft in it? I have a Biggest Big Bertha on the way and was wondering if putting a nice new shaft in the head would make any difference? It is being shipped with a Grafalloy Prolite installed , which is still a good shaft... but if the driver balloons or anything that I don't want it to would installing a new Diamana White board or something like that be a good idea?
Anyone else experiment with new shafts and older heads?

I had my "Titleist 975D" out the other day and I can pound that just as I can my 905R, not quiet as forgiving though. Are all these new shafts really making much of a difference? Or are todays shafts not about better performance and more about creating a better fit to allow for better performance?

Been in the same boat recently.

When I got back into the game afer laying off a few years I wanted to reshaft my driver and 3 wood.

I was advised against this due to the cost and unforgiving nature of the driver head.

Everyone said I'd much rather play the newer tech stuff.

I demo'd a couple of 460cc heads and can certainly understand the appeal. When the funds are available....I'll be going with something newer, most likely a Ping G10 driver, 3wood and 2hybrid.

Hey Dub, thanks for your response. I actually have a Taylor Made 300 driver.. same as you.. only mine is in 10.5*, and I can hit it just as far as my Titleist 905R and it feels better.. but is not as forgiving on the mishits.

I actually think that people are too tempted by the big club heads some time and get sucked into the marketing rather than performance compared to their old clubs.. at least I know it happens to me. The Ping G10 is suppose to be very nice but I am going to see where I end up with this Callaway Biggest Big Bertha. I know that it was an old favorite of mine that I could never afford upon release and then new clubs just kept coming.. I am going back in time though and I think that the Bertha will actually perform just as well as my Taylor Made and my Titleist. We'll see though. If a new shaft would help than I would interested in putting one in.

For me it comes down the shafts just being too dang stiff in my old sticks.

They produced some nice mid trajectories for me before....but after the long layoff and recovery from a shoulder injury I could use a lillte more responsive shaft and the forgiveness is always a good thing.

Used to also play a Titleist 975D that was simply super.

Good luck.

I actually did this about a month ago after trying out 20 drivers and could not figure out which one to get. Dont laugh at this one, are you ready?
I took the old Killer Bee Gimmick driver and put a stiff Graphite shaft on it. I found it in my garage and remembered that I used to love the way the impact was in my earlier years of playing.
The result was a pretty good trick. I used it for about 5 rounds (2 weeks) and had good results with it. Not incredibly long, but straight almost everytime.
I then tried out the Cobra Speed OS Drivers.
They are huge, but I hit them well, so the newly shafted Killer Bee went back in the garage.

Driver heads for the most part are all alike. Granted, some drivers allow for more forgiveness than others, they're all pretty close performance wise. The right shaft is what makes a driver.

More forgiveness or less forgiveness and club head size, and weight. These are things that differentiate one club to the next. I dont think all drivers are for the most part alike.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
