I am planning to replace my graphite x-18 with a set of steel irons. Currently looking at G10, MP-57, X-20 and R7? All advice and other suggestions warmly appreciated. In particular experience with them and pros/cons.

In my Sun Mountain 3.5 light stand bag:

Driver: Burner (10.5 degree)
Hybrids: 3DX DC (17 degree)
Irons: Taylormade R7 (4-AW)SW: Vokey Spin Milled (56 degree)Putter: Scotty Cameron Studio Select Newport 2 (coming soon)Balls: Pro V1 and NXT Tour

I just went through a new iron purchase. I tried every single set that Edwin Watts had (even though I eventually purchased elsewhere). I really enjoyed quite a few sets including the ones mentioned above. But in the end, none of them gave me the feel of any of the Adams line. I ended up with the inexpensive A2's, and couldnt be happier. My game has dropped a few strokes per side, and the price was too good to be true.

To kiwigold: I was just recently in the same boat and really liked a lot of the same clubs that you did. I ended up with TM R7 Draws that I am now selling a month later. They fealt great and I hit them well when I did the demo, but could not play them after I bought them.

To joshtpa: I have been an Adams fan (woods and wedges) for years and am now looking at their irons to replace the R7's I am selling. I can get a pretty good deal on the A3, and know the price on the A2 is rediculously low. Did you happen to try out both, and if so, how did they compare?

I did try both, and the irons felt very similar (to me). I have just yesterday changed out the hybrids to the A3, because they just feel a little more solid. But the irons felt very good and with that price point I loved it even more.

Was there much difference in the regular irons? I have swung both hybrids (except the new 5 iron hybrid) and do like the A3 a little better, just seems to suit the eye and feels like a better swing. I have not had a chance to swing the A2 regular irons though, and have swung the A3. If they are basically the same, then I think I will probably go with the A2 for the price. I can get the A2 for about $270 and I can get the A3 set for a little under 400 from a discount through a store I know the owner of. Any recommendations?

Sorry to hijack the thread there kiwigold, but maybe this will help you too if you are looking at the Adams irons.

THe hybrids were the biggest difference for me. The irons seemed very similar, but everybody will have their own taste and style.

Thank you for all the advice. I just came from a demo and tried the following:

AP1 iron - great club and liked the feel.

TM Burner iron - very forgiving but would probably outgrow within 1 year??

TM R7 - not for me - eventhough very popular (love the look)

X-20 - nice feel and very forgiving

Will try the G10 and Mizuno MP-57 this week...

Ping S58 and S59s are really fantastic feeling clubs. I've said it before, and I'm sure I'll say it again, but, if I weren't on staff with Callaway, I'd definitely be hitting those irons!

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
