I'm interested in picking up a new set of irons. The choices may be between either the Titleist 680 or the Titleist 690.MB. The 680 has a higher muscle back and hits the ball a little lower. I have a set of 962bs right now that hit the ball a little higher than I'd like.

We all know what a good launch angle, etc. is for a driver, but what's a good launch angle (a low, boring one, as better players use) for a 5I? The 5I is the highest numbered club I can hit in my golf dome this winter, and you can't play test a new set of custom fitted clubs to see whether you like them or not, so I'd really like to make the best decision beforehand.

What's a good launch angle for a 5I? How much will ball type change the launch angle (I expect it will affect spin rate a lot more than launch angle)? Are there even numbers available for this?

I talked to you about this very breifly, I was just wondering what number you came up with, and how different those numbers were between the 680's and 690's. (Club Head Speed, launch angle, spin rate)

About two degrees difference in launch angle on a 6I, which is what Titleist offers clubfitters to help them test.

I would suggest you find yourself a set of forged irons that look and feel good to you. Then go to a clubfitter with a launch monitor and have them tweaked.

It'll be the best of all worlds.

This thread is pretty old (December 2004). I played the 680s and later switched to the 735s.

So... yeah... I'll give you the benefit of the doubt on the somewhat patronizing nature of your post. Did you read mine? I was concerned about a small degree of difference in launch angle and was only considering forged blades.

    • Day 58: night putting session for about an hour. Started with lag putting and ended with putts inside 9’. I need to work on putts from 6-12’, but in a solid spot overall.
    • Birdied a different #6 today (incidentally, also a par-5, but not the same one on which I previously birdied).  Here's the funny thing though:  it's the par-5 that caused me to post my "how do I avoid bogeys?" on par-5s recently.  So I guess I still haven't parred that hole.
    • Day 20, May 24.  Played 18 today, very poor ball driving.  One GIR, and it was a 4-wood from the rough.  Several other instances of hitting a green on a full swing (and at least one full swing motion -- a 50% UW) that wasn't for GIR.   Still shot an 87 and even had a birdie (chip-in).
    • Welcome to TST.  I spent a bit of time in the UK but I had to look up Wagon Wheels.  Don't think I ever saw them.  Had to Google to see.  Couple similar items in US but Google says they are different. 😁
    • Day 264 5-24 Worked on getting chest through and arms down infront of chest. Contact isn't great yet but on video looking better.
