hey guys,

I'm using a Cobra HS9 driver and some crap Wilson prostaff multimetal irons at the moment and lately (past few months) I've noticed that the offset on my clubs is bothering the hell out of me. Particularly the HS9. I understand that the offset actually benefits most golfers who have a natural tendency to slice the ball.

Well, that used to be the case for me, but I've now developed a nasty hook on mishits instead of a slice and i'm 99.9% postive that this excessive offset is 75% of the problem It is just starting to feel unnatural and strange to me when i address the ball and i feel that i have to compensate for the embedded alignment of the club and it is killing my game at the moment.

I tried my friend's Callaway Big Bertha 460 today that has less offset than my HS9 and i notice it immediately when i address the ball. Not only that, i crushed it with that club almost everytime i used it.

So my question is, short of tour drivers and irons, which drivers and mid-game improvement irons have minimal offset?

Go to www.tgw.com . Click on "Product Tour" on practically any of their clubs and you can see some decent pics taken from different angles - including address. Also, a lot of the companies will list the actual offset distance of their irons on their website.

not an easy task... TM TP versions are a good choice but a massive hit on the wallet. Browse ebay and keep your eyes posted for some deals, they pop up every now and then

I picked up my r7425 TP for around 200, factory sealed and confirmed with the manufacturer

Agreed. The square face played a big role in my deciding to get my R5 TP. I got mine off ebay factory sealed etc. as well.

hey guys,

So is that to say your good hits are draws or are they straight or fades?

Drivers don't generally have offset, some do, but rather they have open, neutral or closed face angles. The BB 460 has a 1deg closed face angle, to give you an idea most TM drivers are somewhere around 2-3deg closed. If your mishits are near the toe and you have a nasty hook, thats part swing flaw and part what the club is built to do. The club has what they call the gear effect, which if a ball is hit out towards the toe the ball spins in a counter clockwise rotation (for right handers) causing the ball to curve from the right and back into the middle. You hit the ball near the heel of the club and the ball will spin in a clockwise rotation. I would just be carefull with going with neutral or open faced drivers, you really need to go hit a bunch of drives and see which on works best.

Good points that you bring up that i forgot to mention.

My good shots are mostly draws, with some straight thrown into the mix. My mishits are near the toe with a nasty hook like you mentioned. I know that my swing is certainly the main culprit, but I know closed faced drivers aren't helping the problem either. Yesterday, like i mentioned, i used both the HS9 and BB460 drivers. Any mishit i had on the HS9 was much more exaggerated than with the BB460. I know that the BB460 has less closed angle than my HS9, and now that i know it is only 1 degree, I want to test other drivers that are in a 0-1 degree range. I've been wanting to test minimally closed angled drivers for some time now, but before i do, do you know of any off hand? I've checked manufacturers websites and most don't have this information. Thanks for the info, Tom

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
