For those of us who do not have the resources/reason to buy high-end gear but still want the most for our money, what do you consider to be the best of the "cheap" companies?

Tour Edge, Wilson, Dunlop, Golden Bear et al.

I am looking for an iron set, probably in the $200 range (plus or minus 50), maybe.

Or, do you think the best bet is to get higher end used clubs for that price?

The best deal on the market are the Wilson Staff Pi5

These are awesome, tour quality irons. Padriag Harrington used these irons to win the 2007 British Open.

They come with True Temper Dynamic Gold shafts and Golf Pride grips.

golfdiscount.com had them for $199 with free shipping, two days ago, they are now sold out.

Try going to froogle.com and typing in wilson staff pi5, other retailers might be running similar deals.

Soup, of the brand's you mentioned, I would trust Wilson the most, I used to play Wilson "Fat Shaft's" and they worked well. Ultimately, I do think you would be better off buying a "higher end" set of used club's. I just think it would be a better use of you're money. Hope this helps.

First of all you need to address on the type of club you're looking for; beginner, intermediate, or advanced clubs. As long as the clubs fit your game, I don't think brand matters.

On the other side, some people have loyalty to certain brands, like me for instance. If you asked my true opinion I would suggest Mizuno for irons set, simply because they are one of the best irons manufacturers. If I were you, I'd go for higher end pre-owned clubs.

The Wilson Staff Pi5 are not "budget" clubs.

They are high quality tour grade clubs.

They might be too much of a "players" club for you (personally, I think that they are forgiving enough to learn with).

Again, you will not find a better deal out there.

Tour Edge makes good stuff. They have both really high end and entry level lines. Check out some of the online discount retailers for closeouts. I got my Mizuno irons on closeout for $400 after the new MX950s came out.

I don't know if you guys get "JAZZ" clubs down in the US but thats a well known popular beginner club up here in Canada and there prices are fair I think the JAZZ Bear Cats are the newest set out this year. Don't quote me on it, but I've seen a lot of people with those new clubs on the course this year.

Walter Hagen's are quite nice, but for some sets, the low end Adams and Cobras are way better, and not too expensive. Plus, Tour Edge has some economy irons that are pretty good too.

For $200, you can get a set of Snake Eyes or Golfsmith irons. I've played with two guys that have a set of each and they love them.

You can also shop around and get virtually anything on ebay at a reasonable price.

I currently use a Tour Edge 3 wood and I like it a lot. Also, just on the higher end used club end of things, I bought my Ping i3's 3-PW and iWedge (52* gap) for under $280.00 at Edwin Watts. Someone had traded them in and they were hardly used at all. Sometimes you can find a good deal on higher end clubs if you have the tme to shop around.

Wilson Staff Di7 go for around $299 and Ci 6 for around $250 (at Edwin Watts at least), and they are definetely a superior club. For an extra $50 from your budget you can get your hands on clubs like this which would be a better buy really...
