Is higher bounce better for a beginner?

Hello everyone,

I am looking to replace my wedges with new ones. I am pretty sure that I will get a 54 and 60, but I am still unsure about the bounce. I can get either wedge in 10,12,and 14. I was leaning towards either 54/12 and 60/10, or 54/10 and 60/10. I typically use the 60 for flop shots and chip shots, and my 55 for bunker shots and shots from rough terrain. I think 10 deg bounce should be enough for the sand and rough, but I am not sure. I read somewhere that higher bounce is better for higher handicappers. Is that true?

The amount of bounce clubs have should depend on a couple of things: Your swing, and the condition of the course you play. If you have a steeper swing a tend to take large divots, you should probably go with higher bounce. If you have a shallower swing and take thin divots, the higher bounce will bounce off the ground more causing skulls and topping; therefore, you should go with the lower bounce. As for course conditions, higher bounce for softer conditions and lower bounce for harder conditions.

In deciding a combination of wedges, I would like the 54* with higher bounce (8-12) and the 60* with lower bounce (4-6). This will give you options to hit a variety of shots in many different types of conditions, especially if you play in all sorts of conditions.

Hello everyone,

Like the other guy said, it depends on your swing and the grass. Unfortunately, the only real way to tell what bounce you need is trial and error. And if you like to tweak your technique then your ideal bounce will continue to change and you'll want a replacement wedge. So the answer is to buy cheap wedges I guess ;)

Always remember that you can effectively add bounce by opening the club face a little bit.
