I've discussed the merits of some of the GPS units with some on this forum(Sky Caddy etc.) but now am finally ready to buy one! Has anyone used the Sonocaddie V300 and what do you think about it??

I know that's one of the cheaper GPS units right? Not sure how reliable it is, but I have an IGolf Neo and it works well. Especially for $150. Very easy to use and it's the size of a pager.

I have the original Sonocaddie and It has been reliable and accurate.

The Sonocaddie people mapped a course for me on request and were very helpful with email support.

GPS Golf Guru

I was on my PDA earlier, so I could not elaborate.

It has the same receiver as the SkyCaddie SG5, but no membership fee, and you can map and store up to 20 personal courses. You can map a lot of hazards/points per hole, and the best part is that you can map the perimeter of the green. Once you map the green, it will tell you the yardages to the front edge, center or pin, and back edge of the green from any approach angle, just like the SkyCaddie. You can also keep score and some stats on it, and upload it to a handicapping website.

The problem I had with SkyCaddie is that in the area that I play, most of the courses are player-mapped, and thus, don't have the green feature.

And for me, it was the exact opposite. The Golf Guru had virtually none of the higher end courses in the Tampa Bay area. I think they had about 8 in all of tampa. (there are about 35 courses), and skycaddie had every one of them.

I can't dispute that! Their stock courses leave much to be desired. They do not have updated versions of most of the courses that I play either. But I prefer to map my own anyway, that way I can put in my preferred points. I know you can do that with the SkyCaddie, but you lose the green approach feature when you map your own. It is really just a personal preference thing. If you are in the market for a GPS device, you realy can't go wrong with either.

The Sonocaddie V300 is a brand new unit and is attractive because it always tells you where you are on the course in real time as well as giving the yardage to all critical points on the hole you are playing. The fact that you can keep score on the unit and add playing notes would seem to be helpful. Thanks to all on the get backs!

    • To flog this subject even further, if that's even possible, this article from Golf Monthly just appeared today in one of my news feeds. Written by a golf writer in the UK who I never heard of, he's basically saying that there should be only 3-5 rounds from the most recent 20 that should count towards the average and only competitive rounds should count. He claims the erratic scorers would have less of an advantage than they do now. He makes a lot of references to "club golfers" in the UK being the ones who are mostly dissatisfied. https://share.google/qmZZBEoJvOxHxJGil  In my experience with my league where we have golfers with indexes ranging from 5 to 40, looking at the weekly results from the past two years, I can detect no pattern that would substantiate the claim that the current system gives an unfair advantage to either erratic golfers (aren't we all?) or higher handicappers. Apparently though, at least in the UK, this seems to be "a thing."
