I've been striking my wedges so poorly that I've begun to hit like a mini-punch 6 iron from 80-90 yards. Has this ever worked consistently for anyone here?

It seemed to work ok for me considering it was the first time I tried this strategy. One thing I did like is the fact that there is less room for error in the swing, (chunking a wedge, hitting it thin).

Do you always hit wedge from 80-90 yards, or does anyone use this type of shot when there is no danger in front of the green???

I always use my 54* from 100 yards and in, if its more than 30 yards I hit a high shot, If its below 30 I hit a low punch type chip. It's awsome.

If im right around the green with so much green to work with I'll use a 7 iron and hit it like a putting stroke, haven't missed by more than 2 feet EVER with that shot this year.

I hit my 60 degree for 80 yards and my 56 for 90 yards, anything inbetween I aim left and open my club face.

But I believe what works for you is what matters, you don't need to paint pictures on the score cards

I used to hit PING Eye 2's in high school and the PW was terrible...major balloon shots so that it was hard to gauge distance. I started only hitting knock down 8-irons from 100 yards or so and it really helped my game back then. (I still like hitting knock downs from 100-120 when its windy or the green contours are tough.)

But in the future, I would suggest becoming comfortable with your wedges. For me, swinging in control combined with getting better clubs with stiffer shafts was the solution.

Depending on the hole, I've recently been using a 56* - delofting it with hands forward and hitting a like 50-75yd pitch with great success.

Why your 54. What distance do you use your 60?

I love to hate this damn game.

It really depends on the course design and grass. Bump and runs are not a good choice for guarded fronts or heavy undulations. Additionally, they are a poor choice for tiered greens. On some courses bump and runs are not so great because the grass deadens the ball roll too fast. I played a nice course in a company tournament this past weekend, and tried bump and running a few chips early on. The grass was wet and lush enough that it wanted to bump and stop. Went back to more of a downward strike to really get the ball in the air and onto the green. Got closer to the pin much more frequently.

Very tricky tactical situation.... one of the reasons I love the short game.

You cant really do bump and run successfully in winter the ball just stops far too quickly. I usually use 55* from anything in from 90 and throw it up nice and high

I use different punch shots with different clubs, I think it is a great way to hit a safe, accurate shot. Depends on the situation. Sometimes from 80 yards or so I might just take a PW, put the ball back in my stance and shorten my swing, try to accelarate through the ball to send it up there nice and low with some spin. It's a very reliable shot and I find it easier to control the distance sometimes rather than going the high route.

I guess it's because its pretty new and I like to hit it alot. It all depends on the pin position as well. If the pin is right up front I'll use my 60, but I have no confidence what so ever with that club. I don't really like to hit the ball high anymore, So i rarely use it.

    • In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.
    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
    • I think part of it is there hasn't been enough conclusive studies specific to golf regarding block studies. Maybe the full swing, you can't study it because it is too complicated and to some degree it will fall into variable or random.
    • Going one step stiffer in the golf shaft, of the same make and model will have minor impact on the launch conditions. It can matter, it is a way to dial in some launch conditions if you are a few hundred RPM off or the angle isn't there. Same with moving weights around. A clubhead weights 200-220 grams. You are shifting a fraction of that to move the CG slightly. It can matter, again its more about fine tuning. As for grip size, this is more personal preference. Grip size doesn't have any impact on the swing out of personal preference.  You are going to spend hundreds of dollars for fine tuning. Which if you want, go for it. I am not sure what your level of play is, or what your goals in golf are.  In the end, the golf swing matters more than the equipment. If you want to go to that level of detail, go find a good golf club fitter. ChatGPT is going to surface scan reddit, golfwrx, and other popular websites for the answers. Basically, it is all opinionated gibberish at this point.
