Long putters...is it just me or do they look like they would hurt your back more than a regular putter would?

I always hear from players that use them that the main reason for their use is to aleviate their back pains. I don't get it.

Maybe it's just that they're un-attractive to me. What do you think?

How do you figure? You're bending your back less.

I just think they are rediculous, theres reasons for why some people say belly putters are cheap putters.

But see, I find belly/long putters HARDER to putt with.

I love playing against a guy with a long putter. Nothing says I have no confidence in my putting like a long putter. As for the back thing, a lot of the problems come in with practicing. Try spending 30 minutes on a putting green with a bad back. I think this is why Rocco Mediate went to a long putter for a while. Not because he couldn't play with a standard putter, but because it was hard to practice his putting with one for any length of time.

By the way, long putters are great for scooping up and removing baby copperhead snakes from a green without getting bit. I saw that happen once. And those little things are extremely aggressive!

BINGO, if I practice with a regular putter my back kills me, so I just don't practice anymore. I used to use a belly putter but ditched it for the Spider which is such a great putter I don't need to practice!

I don't think belly putters help or hurt your back. If the putter fits you then your posture should remain the same as it would with a normal putter.

Can you explain why you think they would hurt your back more?

I dont understand the appeal of long putters. Ive never tried one, so maybe Im way off base here, but it looks like that you would pretty much have to learn how to putt all over again to switch to a long putter.

they just look extremely uncomfortable! and i agree...if i was playing heads up against someone using a long putter, i would feel extremely confident against them.

I've been using a belly putter for about 5 years now and won't go back. It's almost like legally cheating. With a long putter you can lower the percentages of a miss. Too many things can go wrong with a regular putter.

This game is hard enough. We have technical advantages with every other club why not a putter.

I say go with what works for you. I have tried the belly putters and the long putters, but I don't really care too much for either one. I spent a couple of hours on the putting green with a nice odyssey long putter. I was hitting pretty good lines, but I felt that it was fairly tough to control speed. I actually prefer a short putter. I am 6 feet tall with short arms, but I use a 33" putter.

Completely agree. I've played around (not played a

round ) with one on a practice green. I made a huge percentage of 4-5 footers, but couldn't control distance. That feel would porbably come with time, but to me the belly putter just felt silly. Since so much of golf is mental, I'd prefer to perfect my technique with a 33" putter.
