The British and Australian systems work when all players are members of a club. Here in the US you can maintain a handicap even if you don't belong to a club by joining as an associate. In that way your handicap is maintained without the necessity of paying for a costly club membership.

In my case, I'm a member of a Men's club at a public golf course, and we don't have the luxury of having weekly medals or comps. We hold 15 tournaments a season, plus 5 match play tournaments which run the entire season long. As a busy public facility we are lucky to get that many play dates, and getting open time slots to play weekly medals just isn't going to happen. With the US system it gives a great many golfers the opportunity to maintain a handicap who wouldn't have that chance of we were locked into the type of system that you have. It also makes our handicaps more portable, as they can easily be applied to courses other than our home base.

This system which equals our system in Germany makes it incredible difficult to reach scratch or beyond when you only get 0.1 per stroke you underplay your hcp once you reached 4hcp. You basically need to shoot 40 under par (of your current hcp) to get to 0 and never play worse, which of course is impossible!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but in the system you describe, you have to shoot 40 under par across all of your rounds. For instance, if you are 4-handicap and you shoot 10 rounds this month at even-par, you have shot 40 strokes below your handicap. And if they do a monthly adjustment, you would be at scratch. Similarly, if you shot 20 rounds at two-over that month, you would be cut 40 x 0.1 = 4 shots to scratch.

Or am I getting it wrong? //Anand

First - only rounds in tournaments count - so on your local course you might play a tourney ever 1 1/2 on average. After each tournament you hand in a scorecard. We mostly play stableford system. Lets take the case of a 4hcp and assume his hcp is level with the course rating so is doesnt get any strokes. He shoots a 72 this day (40 stablefords) - his new handicap is 3.6. Next time he shoots a 72 again - his new handicap 3.2. Next time he shoots 76 (35 stablefords) - nothing happens to his handicap Next time he shoots 77 (34 stablefords) - his new handicap 3.3 (+0.1 - maximum that the handicap increases where 34 stablefords is the limit) So every handicap is calculated after every tournament and adjusted and registered with the golf association. And the next time you play you play with your new handicap already. So in my case e.g - i had 10.2 on Sunday - shot 42 stablefords (6over par) and had to play with 9.0 today. When your home course is though and wont allow to go really low (i calc. the average of the EPD-tour players who made the cut this year and they shot 72.1 as avg. and they played much better than last year) it just takes endless to reach scratch. From all our best amateurs i NEVER saw a round better than 2 under par - and some of them are plus hcp - so go figure...

    • Day  3 (4 May 24) - Easy pitch day with 9i in the backyard.  Worked on staying smooth thru impact, keeping shots to 20yds or less.
    • From what I’ve read, it was in the manufacturing process and how the covers were nicking pretty easy.  He has had to resource his factory as the one used earlier is now a TM owned facility.  Initial reports seem to indicate the redesign is going to be a winner…
    • Day 129: 5/4/24 Stack training but could not certify my warmup speed. Dealing with a pulled neck muscle. Chips and pitches at a local course for about 15 minutes.
    • Typically less than 50. I find this can be affected by the "CART" signs on a given course. I don't like taking my rangefinder out of the cart and carrying it around to the green. I am very fearful I will leave it somewhere.
    • First ever holed out greenside bunker shot! It's crazy it took this long to finally get one during a round, but the cold streak is officially over. Hole 6 on the Palmer Course at PGAN. I hit my driver like 225 into a really stiff wind, then worm burned a hybrid into the bunker. I was about I dunno, 40-45 feet away. Birdie! Let's go! The red Xs the approximate location of each shot.  Really fun!!
