I just picked up a Scotty Cameron Newport 2 and am going to send it in to the custom shop. I was just wondering if anyone else has done this. I would like to see some pictures just to get some ideas, so post them if you've got them.

I will be sure to post mine when I get it back.

I know huh... they really know what they are talking about on there. Putter fanatics, if you ever feel like you spend to much money on clubs search out the "collection" or "show your line" threads and wow

100 putters + a majority are tour / limited versions

have you already sent the putter back? I love scotty but his custom shop kind of sucks...

if "custom" means an expensive headcover and a paintfill you can easily do then thats pretty bad. for 100 bucks I have my putter refurbished / refinished (torch copper plate) and my name on the right and left bumpers (not laser etched but HANDSTAMPED) plus a paintfill

give it a thought and I can throw you some details

not to mention they run hundreds of dollars I am very, very impressed with some of the handmade repair tools

I would definitely like to know what you mean by the Scotty Cameron Studio Custom Shop kinda sucks. I thought that they were the end all-be all in customization. Have you had a bad experience or seen some shoddy work? Just curious as I had heard they were the best, but I haven't personally seen any of their work.

I want to get my name on it, new grip, new headcover, and new paintfill. I am not sure about a new finish as I kinda like the finish it already has on it. But I am open to new things. I would love it if you could 'throw me some details'. Thanks.

Ok, here we go... I'm sure this will get people fired up. The standard options won't include a restorization or a handstamp. If you look at what he offers for stamps they are a bit tacky... ("flower power" "clover" and a money sign) http://www.scottycameron.com/customization/default.asp honestly if it were truly custom his shop would accept emails and you'd start a dialog and work together. he's so large that its just not possible... so you're left with expensive and limited options 1) he wont handstamp your name (initials only - $30) 2.) paintfills arent a big deal and can easily be done yourself 3.) you get a fancy "shaftband" wow - thats exciting man I'll give you some props on the grips, they are nice... but the nice ones will set you back cash (37 for a custom, 57 for a leather) the headcovers are cheap (for standard models)... obviously more for the "custom shop" ones overall, EVERYTHING you want costs you something and it adds up fast and in the end its not really "custom", at least to me it isnt

1) he wont handstamp your name (initials only - $30)

Actually, they will hand stamp your name on the bumpers if you have the studio select model. He can fit 5 letters a side on the Newport 1 and 7 letters a side on the Newport 2.

Where else would you recommend having custom work done that is good quality and a reasonable price. Also, there is the Scotty Custom shop stamp that you can get. I agree that the other three are redicualos, though I have seen some creative things done with them placed in the Cherry Bombs covered in translucent paint.

George Palombi (geogolf on putter talk) does great work... you could always talk over options with him (just send him a pm, you'll find his ID as a moderator under the Palombi Putters section)

he can refinish / refurbish for 100 bucks, will handstamp, painftill, can alter some weight, add a floating face (beach) for 50 bucks... pretty much a lot of things

edit: - if you want to give a paintfill a shot let me know and if you need help I can send you some tips - Joann Fabrics has everything, including translucent paint!

They also do refurb work. I just sent one of my TEI3s back to them for refinish, it is going to be a gamer, so I did not go with the custom shop. Mine was 45 bucks for a refinish, including fixing any dents, scratches, new paintfill, polish the insert, and in my case, I wanted to add a sight line. All the pics I have show they do great work.

Here are some pictures of a TEI3 that has been restored and had a dark oil can finish applied, again - all work done by George Palombi

there are two examples here - an original terrylium two and a terrylium long neck

notice the differences in finish - one being an dark oil finish while the other a beautiful chocolate matte finish

also, included a detail shot of the copper insert

I know what you mean... I was pleased with my Studio Style Newport II then one day a playing partner in a tourney had a TEI3 (all rusted out) and he let me make a few putts with it on the practice green and wow, that was it

next day started my search on ebay and boom, 230 in great shape

    • Day 470 - 2026-01-13 Got some work in while some players were using the sim, so I had to stick around. 🙂 Good thing too, since… I hadn't yet practiced today until about 6:45 tonight. 😛
    • That's not quite the same thing as what some people messaged me today.
    • Day 152 1-12 More reps bowing wrists in downswing. Still pausing at the top. Making sure to get to lead side and getting the ball to go left. Slow progress is better than no progress.
    • Yea, if I were to make a post arguing against the heat map concept, citing some recent robot testing would be my first point. The heat map concept is what I find interesting, more on that below. The robot testing I have looked at, including the one you linked, do discreet point testing then provide that discrete data in various forms. Which as you said is old as the hills, if you know of any other heat map concept type testing, I would be interested in links to that though! No, and I did say in my first post "if this heat map data is valid and reliable" meaning I have my reservations as well. Heck beyond reservations. I have some fairly strong suspicions there are flaws. But all I have are hunches and guesses, if anyone has data to share, I would be interested to see it.  My background is I quit golfing about 9 years ago and have been toying with the idea of returning. So far that has been limited to a dozen range sessions in late Summer through Fall when the range closed. Then primarily hitting foam balls indoors using a swing speed monitor as feedback. Between the range closing and the snow flying I did buy an R10 and hit a few balls into a backyard net. The heat map concept is a graphical representation of efficiency (smash factor) loss mapped onto the face of the club. As I understand it to make the representation agnostic to swing speed or other golfer specific swing characteristics. It is more a graphical tool not a data tool. The areas are labeled numerically in discrete 1% increments while the raw data is changing at ~0.0017%/mm and these changes are represented as subtle changes in color across those discrete areas. The only data we care about in terms of the heat map is the 1.3 to 1.24 SF loss and where was the strike location on the face - 16mm heal and 5mm low. From the video the SF loss is 4.6% looking up 16mm heal and 5mm low on the heat map it is on the edge of where the map changes from 3% loss to 4%. For that data point in the video, 16mm heal, 5mm low, 71.3 mph swing speed (reference was 71.4 mph), the distance loss was 7.2% or 9 yards, 125 reference distance down to 116. However, distance loss is not part of a heat map discussion. Distance loss will be specific to the golfers swing characteristics not the club. What I was trying to convey was that I do not have enough information to determine good or bad. Are the two systems referencing strike location the same? How accurate are the two systems in measuring even if they are referencing from the same location? What variation might have been introduced by the club delivery on the shot I picked vs the reference set of shots? However, based on the data I do have and making some assumptions and guesses the results seem ok, within reason, a good place to start from and possibly refine. I do not see what is wrong with 70mph 7 iron, although that is one of my other areas of questioning. The title of the video has slow swing speed in all caps, and it seems like the videos I watch define 7i slow, medium, and fast as 70, 80, and 90. The whole question of mid iron swing speed and the implications for a players game and equipment choices is of interest to me as (according to my swing speed meter) over my ~decade break I lost 30mph swing speed on mine.
    • Maxfli, Maltby, Golfworks, all under the Dicks/Golf Galaxy umbrella... it's all a bit confounding. Looking at the pictures, they all look very, very similar in their design. I suspect they're the same club, manufactured in the same factory in China, just with different badging.  The whacky pricing structure has soured me, so I'll just cool my heels a bit. The new Mizuno's will be available to test very soon. I'm in no rush.
