So... I hate my hybrid. Am I the only one? I can flush a 3-iron to 210 fairly consistently, but when I have an opportunity present itself to hit the 3-hybrid, its low hook city. Its an Adams Ideawood. Its got a fair amount of offset, but I don't think that alone is enough to cause that big of a hook. I see all these reviews and pros saying how they are so much easier to hit, but I just don't get it. Am I the only one?

Thanks!

That offset could 100% cause the hook. I have a draw biased driver with a bit of a closed face that i can hit straight to a slight fade. My uncle hits a Ping G10 neutral biased. He picked up my draw biased and hooked the HELL out of it. He never has problems with hooks. Same thing goes for my dads cobra speed LD offset 3wood. Nobody but myself and him can hit it. It's a weird thing.

Also, hybrids aren't for everybody. If you don't like it, drop it. Its whatever you feel comfortable with.

I agree with you. I don't own a hybrid, but with all the hype about them I tried several. I end up with a big slice. I hit my long iron pretty good and I like the challange. But those hybrids are hard for me to hit. I don't think I have ever hit a good shot with one yet.

I think they may be defunct now, but there was a retail shop called 'Second Swing' I liked there motto which may apply here.

A while back I bought a couple Titleist 503Hs on Ebay. I worked with them, but just didnt feel as comfortable or confident with them as I do with long irons, not to mention the fact that I hooked every shot I hit with them (but I hit long irons dead straight), so I took the hybrids out of my bag and put the long irons back in. I couldnt be happier.
Hybrids may work for some people, but they dont work for me. I'll take a long iron over a hybrid any day.

I dont know why i even carry it anymore in my bag. Last i had perfect hybrid distance to the pin - just to go with an extreme shortend 3wood to avoid the hybrid - i hate these things and have no confidence in them...

Like any club you have to have the right shaft!! The shaft is everything, find the one to suit your swing and you'll end up loving the hybrids. Im guessing if your hitting hooks and its a graphite shaft then it is more than likely not stiff enough for you. Graphite does give you the option of changing kick points, tip stiffness, flex etc much more than steel but to do so you have to try a wider range of shafts and in the end the cost may not be worth it. Alternatively you could get the same shaft as your 3 iron (Steel??) put in your hybrid and try that.

My hybrids are both regular flex, just like my irons. I still cant hit them. Why dink around with different shaft flex with a hybrid when I could just hit my long irons, which I already hit well?
Just because the golf media says that we all should be playing hybrids, that doesnt make it so. I love my long irons and have no intentions of giving them up.

I love my 23 hybrid. It replaces my 3 and 4 iron. But if ever there comes a day when I hit the 3 and 4 higher and straigher, the hybrid is out the door. I refuse to play something just because the industry says so. Stick to your guns and play what you want. You know in your heart of hearts which clubs you have the most confidence in. And nothing is more important on the course than confidence. NOTHING.

Absolutely right, if its not broken dont fix it! If you hit your long irons consistently well then you'd be mad to change. As most golfers do tend to struggle with their long irons the technology of hybrids does make them easier to hit. The key is to find the right shaft and the only way to really do that is hit a few different types. One company's stiff shaft low kick point is anothers regular mid kick point, there is no industry standard for rating shaft characteristics. You need to find the shaft that suits your swing.

If I could hit more consistent decent shots with long irons, I would not swing hybrids except in a tough lie situation. This is where certain hybrids are far superior to long irons even if you hit long irons well.

    • Was this the course with 9 blind shots in the first 9 holes?
    • Woof. Not good. 8:40 to 8:50, blah. I know the grip is turned a bit to the left in that part of the video (face is closed a bit), but… no. Not that.
    • Eh. You're tricking yourself. You can still miss right or left, and what you've created is a situation where you HAVE to miss (but the right amount) to make the putt. That's not for me.
    • I can see a point in this.  If you play a straigth 3 footer with a square face aiming at the hole, you can miss both ways, with a close face or an open one. If you aim rigth an close the face at impact (like tiger used to do), physically you can still miss left or rigth but mentally you are only missing left (closed face) and having only 1 miss can give you a boost in confidence. I putt this way on fade putts and aim left and open the face on draw putts, never liked the uncerteinty of putting square to the target.  I apply something like this on approach shots, only use low or high shots and for middle shots I use a low shot with more loft ot a high shot with less loft. This shots are always what they meat low or high, a middle one can go a little towards the high and the low depending on the AoA of each shot making it mentally a little more uncertain what is going to be.
