I am using the Idea pro Hybrid 2 Iron (18 degrees) for about 2 weeks, have played two rounds with it. The best $150 I ever spent. I tested the Regular and Stiff shafts and bought the R flex shaft based on my control and feel. I was swinging the club at 100+ mph but still felt R flex gave me better control and higher ball flight for a softer landing. This is their standard Aldila VS Proto Blue ByYou Graphite shaft. I am averaging about 225-235 yards on the fly.

I am thinking of buying the 1 iron (16 degrees) or the tour van version 14 degrees. FYI, Anthony kim uses the 14 degrees club. Does anyone have any experience with either one? None of the local stores carry the 1 iron for a test drive. I see one 14 degree available on ebay with stiff flex shaft. I am puzzled about the shaft selection. S or R. Would R flex be a mistake for such a long driving club. I am confident I could comfortably go to 250 yards with the 16 degree and probably much more with the 14 degree.

Hmm.
If I were making the decision i'd be looking be looking at stats.
Making a shot from that far out, am i trying to reach a distant par 5 (16*), or just trying to make headway against the wind (14*).

Why not just stick with a 3-wood? Its pretty much the same loft.

Whats in my :sunmountain: C-130 cart bag?

I am thinking about replacing my 5 wood, the idea pro is a few inches shorter and much easier to hit. You are right, for long par 5's and teeing off on tight fairways on windy days, I use my 3 wood one days when I dont feel as confident with the driver, 14* caould be another option.

Yeagh, 3Woods have roughly the same loft, depending on manufacturer, but they are MUCH longer. usually as much as 3 inches....

I went to my local golf galaxy store today to try and hit the Wilson FYbrid only to find out that Golf Galxy doen'st carry anything from Wilson in the store anymore. -- Golf Galaxy will let you order it from their website, but not their brick stores. oddd.

Wilson's advertising sure does make the FYbrid setup seem pretty nice. Right now I'm hitting the slightly older WIlson Pro Staff (blue) in 3H with 17*. i didn't replace my 3 iron with it, I just don't carry a 5Wood anymore. I just don't feel that the 5W gives me the accuracy that i have with the 3H. Sure, i'm loosing a little distance... but thats acceptable to me (right now)

To try and better fill in some distance gaps, i've been looking at the Wilson FYbrids. Their hybrids are built with a closer set up to my current iron set. Which brings up a question: I know that hybrids are meant to be a replacement but would a hybrid that matches its iron repalcement acutally perform the same? as in, my 3I is 21* at 39 inches and so is the 3H FYbrid.

There are so many hybrids to choose from.....................Perhaps those are things that i'm worried about that are far beyond my acutal skill in the game.

    • Day 27 (7 Dec 25) - Got in a few swings with 9i and hard foam balls in backyard.  Setup weight fwd (rebuilt left foot really lets me feel the weight in a slightly painful way) - kept the backswing to around 9 o’clock focusing on contact and resulting divot pattern.  Like how the hard foam balls come off the face (almost like real balls in sound).  A good abbreviated session as I only able to hit about a dozen balls in the fading light.
    • Day 117 12-7 A bit of chipping practice today. Full swing- hit some real balls to see where Im at.
    • Not the part I was replying to: Handicaps did not go down much (like 0.14 on average IIRC?) when we went from 10/20*0.96 to 8/20. And a good chunk of that was from the +s.
    • I think he meant in the UK. The old system was completely different from the new one. 10/20 x 0.96 vs 8/20 would really only impact very low handicaps I think. The 0.96 serves to increase differentials for plus differentials, where 8/20 vs 10/20 works to lower differentials for all. I don't know many plus golfers who would be upset that their index got lower. A lot of really good players don't even really keep their handicaps up-to-date. They're much more interested in their WAGR rankings which get them entries to certain events.
    • Day 433 - 2025-12-07 Got some work in after Junior Elite before a night of sports (and the return of my wife!). Backswing work. Similar to what a lot of my juniors are doing.
