So short and sweet here's my game: I drive well most days, I putt well and have a fairly consistent short game but still give up most of my strokes there, I hit my long irons very well but I don't hit a lot of greens with the short irons. I've been told I have a very good looking natural swing. I played in high school and after ten years have just gotten back into golf seriously this summer; most of my improvement has been mental and resolidifying fundamentals. I've found this year that I can work the ball a little; I am still learning how.

So...I am ditching my outdated/knockoff gear and buying real irons. I am torn between my friend's set of nearly mint Taylormade RAC Combo's and a set of Mizuno Mp33's. I was always biased against Mizunos for no good reason, but after reading all about them and hitting some at the local Golf Galaxy I am convinced that this is what I was.

My issue is that with my CB's I can't feel what I am doing wrong. I shoot in the 80's -90's but I strike the ball well. On my last trip to Golf Galaxy I bought an MP-29 2 iron to compliment my set and start edging myself toward blades. I hit about 10 shots in their simulator with the 2 iron and hit it straight and 210-220 yards 8/10 times.

I love the way both sets look, but I am thinking that the Mizunos, being a true blade, will force me to reconcile the junk in my swing.

Help? Thoughts? Suggestions? I'll take them all.

Thanks so much. I read this board daily and I feel very lucky to be privy to so much wonderful information and opinions here.

Given the fact that I play MP-33s, and have played Mizuno irons prior, I have a natural bias. However, it is not unfounded. I began the year with a 12 handicap, a solid swing, and a mediocre iron game. After buying a set of MP-33s for $140 (cheap because not many choose blades nowadays), I really started to learn a lot more about my swing. Going to the driving range is such a learning experience because I can actually see tangible effects from the nuances of my swing. This has made me a better and more informed golfer. The RAC set is definitely not a bad set of irons (probably a little more forgiving), but the bottom line is, do you want to shoot lower scores immediately? Or do you want to groove a better, more consistent swing in the long-term? Best of luck.

Edwin Watts has MacGregor VFoil Forged Blade sets on sale for $200.

I'm tempted to pick up a set even though I don't need another iron set.

Maybe split the difference with a true player's cavity? Just an idea because it's what I did at about a 20 handicap and got to an official 13.6 in 7 months due to better iron play.

I play with the MP32s and love them. That said, the Taylormade RAC TP CB circa 2005 are absolutely fantastic. They are very similar to the combo irons you are looking at.

Judging by your statement, I don't think you can go wrong with the combo set. Forgiveness in the long irons and workability in the scoring irons. Just my $0.02.

I can vouch for the Rac Forged TP's from 2005. Switched from my ultra-forgiving x20s to these.

Careful hitting shots in a simulator (especially a 2 iron) - it isnt the same as real life.

Get those clubs (whatever you try) out and hit off grass and see.

I have played everything from ultra game inproving Ping Eye 2's and x20's to MP33 blades and my current Rac Forged TP's.

I echo the comments above - the very forgiving cb irons will improve your misses and help your scores, but the blades will punish your bad shots and make you a better ball striker. I think you realize that - so go get those blades or combos - try the rac forged tp's - got my set in my sig below for under $250 mint!!!

Best of luck!

Well, I really toiled over this decision but I went with the Mizuno MP33s. In fact, I just bought them tonight on eBay for $185 plus shipping, so I'm pretty pleased. I want something that's going to be challenging and give me some feedback. I hit the RAC Combos and they were too much like a CB for me; they felt kind of cheap. To each his own, I guess.
