I have 2 three woods and no drivers. I had bought a Nickent 12* 3 wood to use as my driver but I actually now have decided I probably should have bought a driver and learn to hit it. The shaft in my Nickent 3 wood is a Aldila Proto 85 stiff flex. I was thinking about taking it to a local club maker and get a good clone driver head installed. Thanks for any opinions.

You might find that you like having the 13* 3-wood better than a driver because its easier to control.
Personally, I think being able to hit a driver well is overrated.

IMHO, the 460cc drivers are so easy to hit and so forgiving that NOT having one seems like a crime to me.

That said, I carry a driver and an 18* hybrid and no OTHER woods in my bag.

So what is the loft of your other 3 wood? And I do think it is a good idea that you are teeing off with a 12* wood. Sounds like you know your limitations and that is very very important in scoring well. Now think about making that 12* a 460CC club. There are more higher lofted drivers than a few years ago. You will find you can go harder at the ball than with a 3 wood sized head. Sounds like a good idea to put that shaft in a knock off head. Just remember the shaft on your 3 wood is probably around 43". Don't worry a thing about lengthening your 460CC 12*. You'll hit more fairways and loose virtually NO yards with a shorter shaft. I GAINED distance on my AVERAGE drives by shortening my driver shaft, because I hit the sweetspot more.

Just make sure the clubmaker brings the swingweight up on your new driver head, since it was probably weighted and designed for a 45" shaft. If you do extend the shaft try no more than 44" total. And welcome to the THRIVER (3wood lofted driver) club. I'm not only the president, I'm a member. See my club specs.

No its not a bad idea. Am hitting my driver inconsistently right now and until i sort it out (basically install a new shaft in it), my 15.5* 3W is my driver, hitting it at 240yds max. Sure i lose 20-30yds against my opponents from the tee but they tend to miss the fairway with those bombs.
