I have been playing with a cheap set of clubs (cheaper than a dozed Titleist Pro-V1's) ever since I started golf, and next spring I am probably going to have to get a new set. I am about 5 ft 3, so what I am wondering is that should I have whatever clubs I get fit to my size? Also, what companies make good forgiving clubs (I will probably get used clubs). I have heard nice things about both Callaway and Ping.

My $40 teen set:
fairway wood driver thingy
hybrid
mid and short iron
putterno-name lob wedge nxt tour balls ignite balls

Lots of people recommend Tommy Armour Silver Scots. They can be found really cheap if used.

Ping Zing are probably the most forgiving irons that you can find. You should look for a set on ebay that is gold dot (four degrees below 'standard' black dot) and look for a set that is already an inch or more shorter than standard.

Other Pings that are super forgiving are Eye 2, Zing 2, G2 and others (you can have the lie angle adjusted on any Pings except Zing, so If you find those, get the gold dot (for your heighth)).

If you cut the clubs you have (or cut a set you get) the swing weight is going to change (get lighter), so if you find the shortened clubs are too light - add lead tape...

driver: FT-i tlcg 9.5˚ (Matrix Ozik XCONN Stiff)
4 wood: G10 (ProLaunch Red FW stiff)
3 -PW: :Titleist: 695 mb (Rifle flighted 6.0)
wedges:, 52˚, 56˚, 60˚
putter: Studio Select Newport 1.5

They are forgiving, but I would not go that far. I am guessing you are a little biased towards Ping though. The new Cobra stuff is very forgiving. As are many of the game improvement things of this year.

As far as your height is concerned, one thing everyone forgot to ask, is your age. Are you still growing? Because you dont want to buy clubs cut them down, if your goingt to be 5 inches taller in a year.

True. A little . I do use a Nike 4 wood from time to time, depending on the course. ps. Ping Zings are VERY forgiving.

They are very forgiving. They were my old set until this year. But they are just not as forgiving IMHO as most of the new stuff.

Depends on your age. If you are still growing, forget about the length of the clubs. I got regular sized clubs when I was about 5'2", and I'm not 5'8" only 5 months later.

I am growing, but I am considered short for my age. I want the clubs to last about 2-3 years minimum. My predicted max height, which is when I stop growing, is about 5ft 9, so the clubs should last till I am about 5 ft 5.

I'm on the other end of the spectrum from you at 6'5 and about 295 but I would definitely recommend getting fit.

There is just no substitute for having clubs that fit you personally.

There is nothing better than standing over the ball and knowing "if this shot goes wayward then its my fault, not my club, shaft, grip, lie angle, shaft length" etc.

Also its tough enough to get good at this game without having to compensate for bad clubs too.

When you are growing and expected to be 5'9, I would go with something standard and just choke up. No reason to have to buy new clubs in 2 seasons when you are still growing.

Yea, I think I will get slightly-shorter than standard clubs. These won;t be my final set, anyways, once I start getting earning my own money (I am going to caddy next year) I will get a better set.

    • The term I hear most often is "double teeing" which means the course/club has starting times from both the #1 and #10 tee.  I have encountered this many times and we know if we are the first group off #10, we may well get to #1 and have to wait because there are groups still with tee times yet to tee of #1.  In most instances, where the course/club has a starter, he normally explains this situation.  In this case, the pro advised what you would could/would encounter making the turn to #1.  And, that is exactly what happened.  Probably would have been wise to talk to the pro after playing back 9 and ask when you could go off #1 since apparently that club does not double tee.   Regardless, the outburst towards the other group was uncalled for.  And, I don't blame the member for being upset.  As a member of a private club, you are responsible for the actions of your guest.  I have played many times as a guest in the UK and I am pretty damn sure my host was responsible for my actions while at the club.  I know at the clubs I have belonged to here in the US, that is the way it is.  As a matter of fact, the member may find himself being brought before management and facing possible suspension.  So, I don't blame him for being upset.  However, as the host, he really should have stepped up and put a stop to the OP's actions.  OP makes this statement "I now understand that standards are different on the "private course." But I'll take those lessons to the muni, too."  No, the standards are not different.  You, sir, seem to be just a bit hard headed and belligerent, even if you are college professor...which possibly explains a lot.   JMHO
    • Day 32: worked for about 10 minutes on my drill. Filmed it as well for a check in. I think it’s slightly better but still seeing some issues.
    • Day 44 (26 Dec 25)  -  played in the Friday men’s shootout with a twist - used the Toney Penna persimmons and MacGregor blades - had a blast playing these clubs.  They really help in zoning in on making solid ball contact.  Scoring was solid - had several looks at birdie and had a few par saves.  Overall a day of focused course management.
    • Day 2: 2025.12.27 Eighteen holes at Kauri Cliffs. Focusing on trying to keep flex in right leg during backswing.
    • Day 136 12-26 Had a different practice planned today but life happened. Worked on "wide to wide" and still working on remaining flowy. Starting the club head in front of the ball as a drill, is helping with the flow of the swing.
