My wife wanted to learn how to play golf this summer. She didn't know if she would like it so after a couple of times at the range using my clubs, she decided she "might" like it, and suggested that I look on Craigslist for a set. Within a week we decided on a set of Wilson's that we paid like $80 for (Woods, irons, putter and stand bag). We have since gotten a new stand bag ($20, on Craigslist) but I think for Christmas we are getting each other Cart Bags (not on Craigslist!). As soon as she decides she wants new clubs, we'll get her fitted for some. (BTW, this is not because a previous poster mentioned getting fitted . . . I mentioned this in another thread a month or so ago!). I'll probably get fitted myself because I think my club shafts could be shortened (mainly the woods). She has actually improved to shooting a 98 on a par 72 course this year after only playing for a few months (and got a birdie and a par in her first round!). I can't wait to see what she does next year (I expect her to beat me sometime next year).

As far as putters go, I think she'll probably keep the one in her Craigslist set; she putts better than most people I have seen. In fact the last time we were out (her, myself and two guys we paired up with) they kept saying that they needed to learn how to putt like a girl! No sense getting rid of what works. I just want her to learn that she isn't always going to make those five to ten footers coming back! She thinks she's Arnold Palmer when she putts!

Standard philosophy applies: buy the best gear you can afford regardless of sport, hobby or interest.

Here's a good analogy: If you want to curb a child's interest in playing guitar, go to a yard sale and pick out a $15 acoustic guitar that is so difficult to play the student will give up instantly.

On the other hand, if you buy a quality guitar, (not necessarily expensive) that is age/size appropriate and represents a good tool that promotes learning and progress over time, you've got a child hooked on music possibly for a lifetime.

Golf clubs? Want your wife to go from interested to giving up quickly? Go to yard sale and buy grandpa's old Walter Hagen set (made by Burke!) complete with canvas bag. Wife wouldn't be able to get the 9-iron off the ground!

OTOH, if someone is serious about helping someone learn, you do some research and buy the newest technology and best quality equipment you can afford. For my wife it was a complete Adams set with driver, a couple of hybrids and 6-SW irons. After a few days, she was hitting the SW in the air onto a green and hitting the 7 iron and 5 hybrid off a tee down the range.

Most important 'buying decisions' IMO are:

1) Set budget

2) New or proven technology

3) Best quality you can afford

I wish I could buy my wife a set of clubs - but she won't hear of it, at least until our 15 month old son is a bit older. She thinks it's too expensive and time consuming while we have two kids still requiring daycare and after school care. And she's a tennis player and says that's enough for now. I'm jealous because the rest of my buddies have started playing with their wives occasionally and it just seems like such a great family activity.

Luckily my daughter (7) is very interested and I've been taking her to the driving range every other Sunday. I got her a decent set of used kids clubs from Play it Again Sports and a nice bag. I need to find her a putter that fits her better though.

While I understand dave s' point about cheap equipment contributing to discouragement, I can't see spending a lot of $ on stuff she is going to out grow so quickly.

What's in my bag:
Cleveland Hibore XLS Monster Driver
TourEdge Exotics 2,3,4 hybrid irons
Tommy Armour 845cs Silverbacks 5-PW
Assorted wedges, Ping Scottsdale Anser

Hi

Considering my wife has little interest in playing let alone practice, I figured an all hybrid box set would work. It is an easier set to hit. It is comprised of a 12 degree driver, 3 wood, 5 wood, 3-PW hybrids and a putter. She went to the range once 1.5 years ago. I used it when I had the shanks. Even with the shanks on my own old set, I had no problems with an all hybrid set.

They don't have that set anymore but here is something similar: http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/pr...ductId=2879406 I just realized that I responded before. Oh, well.

My gf doesn't want to play she says it is the most boring game. She drives the cart though :)))

About 8 years ago, I took my dad to the driving range. He hit a couple of balls and he now plays everyday since. He was a huge soccer fan, player, trainer, soccer dad ;), etc. and after his knee surgery (he broke his knee playing soccer...) he was left there without any sports he could think about. I don't know what happened that day but I know I can remember every minutes of that day.

Well, I bought my mom her first set of club 4 years ago. It was a RAM package... The only one I could afford at that time. My mom after visiting Scotland said that she wanted to play Golf. I was a kid at that time. 5 years ago after my first paycheck I went on Internet and bought a set of clubs for her. She didn't stop playing since she received them :)

Well.. I learned some lessons from my exprience.

I had bought a set of clubs for wife and also for mom.
For first time when I choose the set, I tested and researched what's the best clubs for women and purchased Callaway iron set with TaylorMade woods wih Odyssey putter. (it was 2004). The combination of the set was ideal (at least I thogut it was). The set was too much for a beginner. My wife lost interest and stopped practicing after all.

A year ago, we both went to a golf shop and tried Adams A3OS 13 pieces. First words came out from her was.. Wow. She can hit balls!!. The clubs are made to launch ball easy for beginner. Once ball gets up on air, she felt that she can play golf and asked me to go to range for first.

Now I recommend Adams A3OS set for every women who would like to start to golf. I learn that the most important thing for beginner is not to get frustrated but enjoying it. Choosing right equipment for level is very important if your women are beginners.

Good question -

I think I'm in love

Me too! And I'm a lefty myself. Just TRY finding clubs. Club fitting is the only way to go.

There's an underlying assumption here though--that they guy is in charge of buying the gal's clubs. Nah--the only club my husband has ever bought me is off a shopping list I gave him. My clubs are a lot better than his. That said, the stereotype is that men are a lot more willing to change clubs than women, and it seems to hold. Lots of my golfing buddies haven't bought a club in years. My bag seems to turn over every year, except for my putter. I am totally in love with my putter and wouldn't consider rotating it out.

My wife has been playing golf for a little over a year now. We are both in our 60's and retired. I bought her a starter set of Ram clubs w/ bag for about $120.00. She took some lessons and started golfing. She is hooked on golf and now tries different brands of GI clubs each time we go to the range. So far she keeps going back to the Adams A3os clubs and I suspect that she will end up getting fitted for those clubs. I'll keep you posted. By the way, she got a hole in one on a 130 yd par 3 a few weeks ago. I say it was luck, she says otherwise. Anyway that's one more hole in one than I've got and I've been golfing a little longer that her. I'm also considering some GI clubs.

I know someone who has 26 pairs of golf shoes - one pair per outfit - can anyone beat that?!

Wow! If this person plays golf two times a week, for the next 50 years, and alternates the 26 pairs of shoes each time they play... They could only wear each pair about about 200 times.

I have some 2 year old Nike golf shoes that I've worn close to or more than 200 times...

Now let's see... I am looking for some feedback on which clubs should I buy to my mom since my situation has evolved a bit I can afford it I guess. What do you guys like to play?
