Hi all, just signed up - hence my first post
Ive had my current Zing2's for 12yrs now, and they took me down from 20 HC to my current 12, where I have been for the last few years, despite not playing THAT much, and hardly ever Nov - March.

This year however, have got the bug back, and been playing some great golf, including my best ever 2 rounds, one 2 over Gross and one 4 over.

So, intent on getting to Single figures H/C, I'm craving a more 'Players' type club, and have tried both the Mizuno MP57 and the Titleist AP2's.

Both had the DG s300 shaft in, which I wasnt totally happy with, but it felt better in the AP's.
Then went to a local fitting centre and tried the AP's with the Project X 5.5 shaft, and what a difference. Lovely weight and feel to me, more of the same swingweight that I have been used to perhaps.

What are anyone's experiences with moving from a GI iron like the Zing2 to a more advance club, and what did it do for your game?

Anyone any comments on the AP's generally ?

Thx

The first place to start might be here .

I didn't move to them from GI clubs, but as a 12, you're probably on the borderline between AP1 and AP2. So you may want to read the AP1 review too.

ChrisMc,

As a 12, iacas is right. But, if you intent is to get into single digits, I think the AP2 irons are a better way to. Also, if you are a good iron striker already, no doubt the AP2 irons are great.

Chris- I can give you a perspective from someone who has flip-flopped on players versus GI irons. I used to play Mizuno T-Zoid Pro's (Dynamic Gold S300) but hurt my back and couldn't find the sweet spot for an entire year. Switched to Nike Slingshots (Dynamic Gold S300), which were great on mishits but I could never tell how close I was to the sweet spot unless I was really off, plus the square grooves made it impossible to control spin. I also couldn't work the ball left to right or control the trajectory with any consistency. Well, over the last few years my game has come back and I've been a 10 HDCP, flirting with single digits, so I decided it was time to go back. I tried everything out there but really wanted to go back to Mizuno. As you can see by my sig that Titleist AP2 (ProjX Flighted) won me over big time. It was essentially a tie between the Mizuno MP57's and AP2's but the more I tried them (at least 4 times each over a months time) the more I found the AP2's were for me. I highly recommend the Project X Flighted versus the standard Project X because it helps control the trajectory. As far as making the switch from GI to players irons, I wish I had never switched to the GI's when I was struggling. Boy did I miss the feel and playability and I've never been happier. I had almost forgotten what a great shot felt like so every round I have played since getting them has been like opening a present Christmas morning as a kid. I'm never going back! If you have any specific questions let me know. Good luck!

ChrisMc,

I really dislike the PX Flighted shafts with the AP2 irons....and they don't make a lot of sense with the AP2 heads anyway since they are flighted by design. Plus, I didn't like the higher launch and extra spin of the PX Flighted shafts. Titleist didn't envision players wanting the shaft as it is not a standard option.

iacas : Thx for the link, I had read that actually, certainly a good review.

MJ : Many thanks for your thoughts, sounds as if I should be fine. I must admit, I hit my Irons pretty solidly most of the time, and certainly when I hit the AP's with the 5.5 ProjectX shaft in, it was a good trajectory and a nice draw, felt good for me.

Not sure what difference the Flighted makes, but from what I tried, I was happy.

winders : Again thx for your comments, 2deg upright like me I see

I hit those, Mizuno MP 32's, Mizuno MP 57's, and Nike CCI forged irons and honestly the AP2's were my least favorite.

The MP 32's were the least forgiving but felt the best. I preferred the Nike CCI to the MP 57 but they were very close.

The AP2's felt the clunkiest to me out of all of them, but thats a personal preference I know many that like them.

i just bought a new set of them last week, first off, they look so good and are so shiny i almost liked looking at them more than playing with them. it kind of hurt me to take divots and get them dirty. once i got over the keeping my new clubs looking brand new!! it took about 2 rounds before i got adjusted them, they are far different from my ping raptures i have been playing for the past year. i did hit 1 or 2 chunky in my long irons because they dont have the huge sole i was used to. the feel i get when i hit the ball with these clubs cant be described, its great! i am able to work the ball so much better! i am not a single digit handicap and got so tired of hearing the guy at the PGA store try and talk me into the AP1's i say throw handicap out the window and base it off of your ball striking. with the tape on the face of the club and hitting 20 balls i had 1 ball 1/8" off the center of the club face. just like so many others, my handicap doesnt come from my iron play. 9 times out of 10 i make solid contact so these irons fit my game perfectly. if you hit fat or thin these clubs are not going to do anything but make you mad, they dont have the forgiveness. but they are not made to reward poor ball striking. me and my 11 handicap dont have any regrets. i cant think of anything about the AP2's i dont like, i feel like they are perfect!
