Hi guys,

This may seem like a stupid question, but what actually defines a tournament as a "classic"?

I dont think there is set of standards its just the name of the tournement such as open, chamionship, ect.

I think it has more to do with who the combatants are, as well as the uniqueness of the situation. I'd guess that more match-ups are considered "Classics" in Majors than regular Tour Events: Nicklaus-Watson at Turnberry and Pebble Beach, those I consider classics. Also Faldo-Norman at the Masters. Several of Tiger's Major wins are considered classics (arguably, a lot more than several!). John Daly coming out of nowhere as the 4 billionth alternate at the '91 PGA was a classic to me.
My Equipment:
Northwestern 3-, 5-, 7- and 9-wood;
Goldwin AVDP Irons (5-10 plus PW);
U.S. Golf 60 degree wedge;
See-More Putter; Bushnell Yardage Pro 1000 Rangefinder;Golflogix GPS.

Smallville's point is valid but i think we need more clarification in what the OP is asking. Im asking the question that a tournement has the word classic in its name like it would have the word championship in it too. Like Mercedes-Benz Championship, FBR Open, or Bob Hope Chrystler Classic.

What Smallville is answering is the classic tournements from years past, like Nickalus at the 86 masters would be considered a classic tournement.

AVR2 could you plese specify what you meant in the OP.

How could I have left that one off? Jack winning the Masters at age 46 was the Shiznet.

Yes, that's what I meant. What actually defines "Classic" in the sense of "Bob Hope Chrysler Classic" or "Mayakoba Golf Classic" or "Dubai Desert Classic"? Do you need X number of competitors playing over Y number of days?

Nothing to do with that at all. Much simpler - It has everything to do with whatever name the tournament marketing team comes up with. Really.

So that's really it? There are no specific criteria that have to met for a tournament to market itself as "The Joe Schmo Classic"?
