I have been looking for a new set of irons as of late and cant afford to spend 500 or 600 dollars on a new set. I currently am hitting TA 845s that are probably 15 years old or better and other than being a bit inconsistent i like them and wasnt even wanting a new set until i broke my old ping knock off driver a couple of months ago and bought the Adams bul 5000. Wow could not believe how much of a difference it made in my game. So now i am in the market for a set of irons. I want a set that will give me some feedback without having to take 100 trips to the driving range to learn how to hit them. I am a 19 handicap now, but i also quit playing for 7 years or so and just really picked my clubs back up. I was previously a 14 handicap and if i could ever have learned a short game could have probably been in the single digits fairly easily. I took a trip to a local golf shop and hit the Mizuno mx 25's, ping g5's, soe cobra's and the mx-19's. Hit the mx-25's first and to be honest they made every other club feel like garbage, but really cant afford them. When i hit them my swing speed with a 6 iron was 92-95 not trying too over swing. My irons are a pretty solid part of my game and am very comfortable with my long irons. These are some i was considering.

Titleist 704cb and the 804
Cleveland TA 7

Since i really haven't hit another iron in 12 years or so, i would appreciate some feedback from someone that has played these irons. Thank you in advance for the help.

He said he can't afford that kind of money - man!!!!!

You will find lots of excellent sets on ebay and you will be able to get them for considerably less than $550. Try and hit as many sets as you can (easier said than done) and go back to ebay and see if you can get the ones you like from there.

Out of the clubs you listed, I can only speak on the TA7's as that is what I currently play. I bought my set in 2002 new and have yet to find a set of new irons that I like better, or at least not to the extent I want to drop $600 to $1000 on. The Taylormade RAC LT, which came out about the same time as the TA7, are very similar in feel and performance, at least in my opinion. I'm a 14 handicap and have tried blade and muscle back Mizunos, which when hit solidly definantly have a better feel. However, I don't have a lot of time to practice and my consitancy really suffered, so both times I went back to the TA7's.(thank goodness I didn't sell them)

I've seen TA7's on ebay for $150 or less, so I don't think you can go wrong. I'm actually thinking of finding a set of TA7 Tours to try, as these would be a slight move toward more advanced irons with less offset (baby steps!), but I haven't found a set cheap enough yet just for a test run.
Good luck

Thanks for the advice fella's. That is a good price on the Ap1's, but i really dont want to spend that much. Plan is i hope that this set will get me enough feel to get more consistent in my swing. When that happens and i get comfortable enough with my game, i will probably go to a full blade or more of a players iron. I was just wondering if anyone had hit these before and if they were a pretty good transition from the 845s to eventually a blade.

Do you get pretty good feel out of the TA7's because i was leaning pretty hard to those. I have read alot of good things about those. Hey you might want to check out callawaypreowned.com, they have a set of the TA7 tours for 169.99. Dont know how much you want to spend, but that seems like a pretty good price.

To me they have very good feel. I'm sure single digit handicappers who play blades would disagree. But even after giving blades a try, my opinion of the TA7's has not changed.

    • Day 21 - Good session with driver and 6i. Hitting real golf balls is quite a bit different from the foam balls, still getting used to that change.
    • There are so many videos comparing and contrasting everything that I am both overwhelmed and more than a bit skeptical. Your comments above are much more valuable than hours of you-tube videos. Generally speaking, I’d much prefer to read something that someone took the time and trouble to write (such as your comments) than a bunch of videos, or worse, meaningless reviews that seem like they are all cut and paste selections of the same script. I’m more of a RTFM type than a watcher of “instructional” videos. By way of explanation, I don’t watch TV either.  So thanks - I’ll take that under advisement. I have an H3 that I bought for $10 that I’ve been carrying around but not sure why. Seems like a cool club, but I just don’t really know what to do with it.
    • I was using the window as a mirror. Just trying to be a more aware of the feels for a better backswing. Trying to not be as closed from A1 to A2. Then not letting the club head flip inside. What I was feeling was a pressure my right wrist, and like the palm of my right hand was pushing upward against the grip of the club. My right hand was the underside of the swing path.  Going to play around with this a bit more. It looked pretty decent with mirror/window work. Just wanted to jot it down.
    • Day 4: 3/26/25 Par4Success workout followed by putting through 50 mm gates.
    • Day 249: did a stack putting session and then worked on 5 foot putts for a bit.
