Long story short - a putter that I has assumed was stolen many years ago resurfaced in my garage (I only wish the rest of the clubs did too).

It is an Acushnet Bullseye (flange back, bought new approx 1980) and was one of my favorite putters I ever owned. It is in need of some repair, e.g., new grip, new shaft, etc.. My main questions deal with the head. It used to be a beautiful brass color but over the course of the years it has turned black.

1. Is there a way I can clean this? Should I even try?
2. Are there golf repair shops that do this type of work - and if so who are they?.

I really liked this putter and want to try and get it back to playing condition.

Thanks in advance,
Paul

I've used Brasso cleaner before on copper and brass. It did a good job of restoring the metals to their original finish.

SAFELY, PLEASE! ... pull over to a Telephone or Cable TV bucket truck and ask the operator if he has some Fiber optic cleaning wipers. ( Something very similar to "Orange Clean" they come in a package similar to a very large condom) Trust me, if you are going to cause a car accedent due to what you've done, he won't have them even if you offer him $100.00. I'll give you all I got for a couple of bucks... for a six pack. (Truck # 48, Salt and Pepper beard). Try that first... Then go with metal cleaners which I am not familliar with at all. It won't take off rust, but it'll clean off all the crap. Like the old Secret perspiarant commercial said: Strong Enough for Fiber Optics, But Made for a Putter...

I ordered a Chicken and an Egg on the Internet, to find out which came first... I'll keep you posted!

Ditto. Brasso does a great job on my Ping Anser & Ping Pal. Lately I've been using MAAS Metal Polishing Creme (comes in a tube sort of like toothpaste) which works great.

Although my signature says I'm using a Toney Penna blade putter right now, I have six or eight putters and alternate from time to time. And, of course, the Pings get gunky looking just by sitting in the closet.
