Trying to get an accurate idea of how far I hit each club.

I played a round of golf with some friends yesterday, and I had a hard time figuring out what club to use for each shot. Part of it was because I didnt know how far the pin was after my tee shot. But most of it was because I dont know how far I can hit each club. I printed off a page which gives you a general idea of how far a club hits, but obviously everyone is different.

Im going to the range today to get an average of how far I can hit each club, but Im trying to figure out how many times I should hit each club to get that average. What do you think? Sorry if this may be a dumb question, but Im just a beginner still trying to figure everything out .

The best ways I have found are -

1. Go to a well marked range with plenty of marked targets. Some of the ranges with grass tees move them every so often so you have to adjust. 2. By actually playing a fairly well marked course and keep track of shot distances. Or if you have a great memory you can plot them all in the Google Earth app, if your course is captured in high enough resolution. [Most metro areas] 3. If you have a wide open park space, school yard, or a very large back yard :) You can walk off markers. I have found that this site get me in the ball park. http://www.deeprough.com/distance/

If you have the means, buy a laser rangefinder and hit the range. Figure the exact yardage to the pin, and figure out your distance. (This would work if you are hitting anywhere to anything - i.e. in a park hitting to a bag or cooler you bring with you.)
You can also learn on the couse with the rangefinder, without having to guess whether the markers are accurate.

I'm a 6 handicap right now, and have only played with my new rangefinder for about 4 rounds, but I'm starting to really dial in my iron distances.

Maybe look for a used model online or something.

Buy yourself a surveyors measuring wheel, it'll cost you about $50 off ebay. Buy yourself a bag of 50 used balls identical to what you play. Find an area where you can hit your balls preferably when the ground in the landing area is soft, after a day of rain or early morning is a good time. Hit 40 or 50 with a 9 iron and walk out to the middle of the grouping, (the distance where most of them finished) and with your measuring wheel measure back to where you hit them from and write it down. Repeat this for every club in your bag a few times over a few weeks (don't do all of them in a day!) until you have a nice consistent yardage for every club.

If you change the ball you are using or if you get a new set of irons or reshaft them or your swing improves do it again.

No point in guessing when it is relatively simple to find your exact yardages.

This is a fairly simple matter to sort out.

Spend some time on a range with known distances like the guys mentioned.

Keep in mind that your "known" distances will change on the course depending on wind & elevation. Good luck.

    • I think part of it is there hasn't been enough conclusive studies specific to golf regarding block studies. Maybe the full swing, you can't study it because it is too complicated and to some degree it will fall into variable or random.
    • Going one step stiffer in the golf shaft, of the same make and model will have minor impact on the launch conditions. It can matter, it is a way to dial in some launch conditions if you are a few hundred RPM off or the angle isn't there. Same with moving weights around. A clubhead weights 200-220 grams. You are shifting a fraction of that to move the CG slightly. It can matter, again its more about fine tuning. As for grip size, this is more personal preference. Grip size doesn't have any impact on the swing out of personal preference.  You are going to spend hundreds of dollars for fine tuning. Which if you want, go for it. I am not sure what your level of play is, or what your goals in golf are.  In the end, the golf swing matters more than the equipment. If you want to go to that level of detail, go find a good golf club fitter. ChatGPT is going to surface scan reddit, golfwrx, and other popular websites for the answers. Basically, it is all opinionated gibberish at this point.

    • Well the first advice I would give is to look at your swing. If you are swing out to in, it may be difficult to fix your misses with club adjustments. They would only be a bandaid. I use midsize grips because I have long fingers and I feel I have more control with them. I also have tinkered with shaft length and swing weight. But I know when I miss it’s because my swing was off.
