I'm loving golf since getting back into it this past May....laid off the game for a few years.

Anyway...there have been some new developments since I used to play. Some of them, like hybrid clubs, for instance, had virtues that were self-evident. Great idea.....great application....have helped many better enjoy the game.

Other of these developments appeared to me to be bogus wastes of money. One in particular being the numerous specialty golf tees. I wrote them off as more hocus/pocus ways to get us to part with our hard earned $$$. I strongly voiced my opinions on this forum.

Well folks, those opionions of mine were based on ignorance. I had never tried these products....therefore I should have remained silent.

I was playing with a group of guys and noticed that one of them was using a white tee with a yellow band on it. I inquired about it and he explained that the mark is where he stops pushing it into the ground. Tee height is consistent. He gave me one to try out. I found it to be too short (the mark) to my liking with my driver.

Later on while in the golf store I see bags of these tees near the cash register. I notice there are some 3 1/4" (blue band) models. I buy a bag and away I go. These have been outstanding. I consitently tee up the ball swiftly at the same height each time. It's a thoughtless process. I don't have to check to see if it's at the equator or not.....simply stick it in the ground to the band and all is well. Excellent product. Works and speeds up the game (ever so slightly).

Fast forward things a couple of months to last Friday. I'm playing in a foursome with some much better golfers. We were playing hawk along with a skins game they had going. Things were getting interesting among them....great golfers. I knew I was gonna wind up paying them.....but I was simply considering it a cheap lesson. It was a pleasure to watch two guys in their fifties and one my age shoot 2-5 over. Straight hitters, super short games and lights out putting.

Anyway, we were on one tee box waiting for the hole to clear and one of them was looking around the box picking up usable tee remnants. The other one laughed and said that he'd never need another tee unless he lost the one in his hand. He said he's played hundreds of holes with the same tee. I examined it and handed it back. He told me to try some and see if I wasn't impressed. I later found out the tee is a Zero-Friction tee.

Well I picked some up that afternoon at the golf shop and gamed them this week. Duribility is unreal. I don't have a clue whether or not the other wild claims are true but the duribility is unbelievable. I bought the 3 1/4" as well as the shortest ones. I only took one of each out and pocketed it with my divot repair tool. Two rounds later and the same two tees are in great shape....the long one for driver and the the short one for everything else.

My only complaint is that they didn't have them (don't know if the even manf. them) in brighter colors to make spotting them a breeze.

I didn't think that the basic wooden tee could be improved upon. Well, I now have been properly schooled on the matter. I'm gonna see how long these two packs of tees will last. I suspect that I'll give a good number of them away way before I ever break them.

Funny stuff, Dub. Enjoyed the read. I've seen the zebra striped tees my friend plays which we refer to as 'cell towers' because they're about 4" long! Rik put's 'em in to the 3rd stripe.

But since the tees are the regular wooden type, he saws one off nearly every time.

I like the idea of the single-striper which would consistently put your tee ball at the right height. Gonna look for some of those. Thanks for the tip.

Ironically, #9 tee last Sunday, I picked up one of those old plastic (looks just like a wooden tee) tees off the ground. Bent it around a bit and threw it back! Never could get those 'unbreakable' plastic tees!

I wouldn't say impossible.....I've seen plenty of them broken and have sheared a few myself. Still quite durable though and hell on mowers too from what I hear.

I use white wooden tees. I break one almost every tee shot. I like it that way. I bought a thousand long wooden white tees for 25 bucks. The most important thing for me in a round of golf is to keep the same BALL for the entire 18, not the same tee. I think breaking the wooden ones is a good confidence booster.

I've played the zero friction tees all this year and I do like them for the most part. I go through a lot of tees if I'm using wooden ones...much easier to keep the same one in my pocket. I do break them fairly often though...most often after they've been used for a few holes and then you find a tee box with some fairly firm ground...they will quite often shear off. I'm sure it doesn't help that I tend to use my tees to repair divots, which causes them to get bent back and fourth quite a bit. I do prefer the wooden tees for fixing divots though :).

I have used several different types of the non friction and unbreakable tees. my favorites are the new ETERNI-TEES. I haven't broke any yet and they come in sets of 3 long tees , which are flourescent orange, and 2 shorties, which are white.
