I need some recommendation for GC's that aren't too expensive to go to in northern NJ. Not too far from the GWB if possible.

Bergen County courses require a county card, I believe (or somekind of registration last time I looked). Berkshire Valley or Bowling Green in Jefferson are both really good. Others are the Crystal Springs courses in Vernon. All are about roughly 50 minutes west of GWB.

I'm a fan of Spook Rock. It's around 20 miles north of the GWB (up the Palisades and then off the NYS Thruway).

Spook Rock is a good suggestion (altough it is in Rockland County, NY rather than NJ) If you want a real treat, play Patriot Hills. it is just off Exit 14 on the Palisades Parkway, about 30 minutes North of the GWB and the same disctance as Spook Rock. It is a little more expensive, but less crowded and has a lot of elevation changes. Rotella is a lesse expensive alternative off Exit 13 on the Palisades and even closer is Blue Hill a few minutes off of Exit 6 on the Palisades (the closest of them all from the GWB) A real good deal for NY residents is Rockland Lake. They have an executive course and a Championship course. The big courses is a great layout and scenic althoogh not always in great condition and is crowded on Summer weekends
All of the foregoing are in Rockland County, NY

In Bergen County NJ there are Bergen Hills (f/k/a River Vale), Pascack Brook and Emerson. Bergen Hills is the best of the three but not as nice as Spook Rock or Patriot Hills. There is a public course called Overpeck which is close to the Bridge either off of route 4 or route 80 (I forgot which) It is notheing special and can have slow play, but it is convenient. Further North, near Mahwah is Darlington which is okay.

Here is a link to some of my photos of Patriot Hills, Spook Rock and Rockland Lake all taken last Fall when the leaves were pretty.

    • If I can take a full swing, I'll use the stock club for that yardage.  I can't really get creative.  Just don't have that ability.  In the past, I used a sand wedge for all my shots around the green, opening or closing the face and moving the ball back or forward in my stance to get the flight I wanted.  I am trying now to use different clubs around the green.  I'm less likely to flub it but I struggle with distance control.  More practice required.
