I'm looking at getting a new putter shortly and would like some opinions please. I have shortlisted the Ping i-series Piper or the Odyssey white hot xg number 9. They are both the same basic design with face inserts, just wondering which people prefer?

I play with a ping pal 4 which is probably 20 years old by now. I think I should get a new putter since I started playing a lot more this last year. I tried out the Odyssey with inserts and it just felt too? soft, I'd go with the ping Piper.

I've drifted away from inserted putters lately.

The Odyssey your are considering would be my favorite between the two. New putters are certainly an adventure....sometimes a bittersweet one....sometimes dead on.

A buddy of mine just started using an Odyssey White Hot after going through a few different: Scotty Cameron C'62 #3, Ping (pixel insert), two different Yes putters. He's stroking it pure as heck...that insert is working well for him. He said he played poorly today...but carded an 82.

Thanks for your replies. One of my problems recently is leaving long puts 2-4 feet short. Would softer inserts like the odyssey make this worse? I currently use a milled face putter.

Just got the Ping Piper (Karsten) and can't praise it enough. I've had Odysseys (blade and 2 ball) - they make good putters too.

I'd go with Ping though because the ball goes on line much easier when I hit it.

So many choices......so many really good choices, too.

For instance....one could stay within the YES brand line-up and find some real gems. I'm not real crazy about their grips....but their putters are sweeeet.

My recent new putter search came down to these two models as well. I spent about 30 minutes trying them (in the store) and although they are very similar, I liked the feel of the Odyssey a little better so that's the one I bought.

Boils down to personal preference, YMMV. Oh yeah, check out the new Cleveland Classic 2 - very similar without the insert.

I just got back the from the golf store and hit as many putters as I could. I went with the one I was able to sink the most puts with! I suggest you do the same!

I say go to a golf shop and demo both in a sudden death putt-off!

The one in your signature line is one swee mallet.....one I highly recomend to those considering that style of putter.

Do you really find that new putters make a difference to your game? My driver, hybrids and irons are all good (new) makes but i actually still play with an old Hippo putter i had when i first started playing golf. I admit sometimes my putting is erratic (as is my whole game) but i blame that on me rather than my putter.

Should i invest in a new putter or stick with the one in my bag?

I was talking to my club pro about putters the other day. He said if you can't tell the difference between a donnay (cheapo) and a ping putter then you're playing the wrong game.

I just picked up an odyssey black series-i #1 and I was going from a cheap affinity putter, which worked pretty well until the milled insert got squished too much and now it has a dead feeling. The researched putters make an extreme amount of difference. this wand gets the ball rolling on line the instant it hits the face. To answer a past question, insert putters are meant to go a bit further. If you're putting short, an insert may do you some good. I'm told that the problems with inserts are that the "feel"/sound is muted so people end up pressing too hard and overshooting as compared to a harder, milled face. I've only played once with my new stick but the results are amazing. I did miss a few but that's because I haven't learned to trust my stroke, an ongoing process, but this putter is getting me on the right track. So, all in all, if you put short, try an insert.

Yeah it is man, I am really liking it. I recommend it to anyone looking at putters.

I play an XG#9 at times and I really like it.

You can try the Never Compromise Milled #4 if you want the same style with no insert.

I have an Odyssey Black Series i #9, I've never tried that Ping putter however. The Black Series seems to have a firmer insert than the White Hot XG #9 and it looks sweet. The White Hot XG is a decent putter and a great value but I just never got to like its feel. But then again, I'm obsessed with the forged feel and am thinking about getting an old 8802 style putter.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
