Hi guys and gals, I am having a problem and I hope I can find the answers here. I am a 10 handicap and I feel that my iron game is what is really holding me back. I am currently using Bridgestone J33 cb irons and I was wondering if switching to a more game improvement iron would be a good thing for a person at my level? Perhaps even going as far as nike sumo irons. I have always been under the impression that irons like these are for 20+ handicappers, I could be wrong. Keep in mind I don't care about workability or even look, I just want to keep it straight and hit more greens. HELP

Sounds like you may want something more forgiving.

Changing irons is a tough one...at least for me. I don't mind trying out other types of clubs....but something about new irons...tough transition period or something. Maybe it's because I've always transitioned into more of a players club from the previous set (less offset, stiffer shafts, etc.). Every time I think that I want some new irons (like right now for instance...just saw the new pics of the Callaway X-forged II irons...OMG...want them badly) I'll play a round and take note of all the impact marks on my iron shots that day. A good many of them are well offcenter but yet they work out just fine. I'm very, very pleased with the forgiveness in this old set....scared to give that up.

I have a similar handicap and experience basically the same situation this year. I was playing the Cobra Carbon Cavity Back players iron and tended to spray/mishit my irons after some fabulous drives with my more forgiving Nike Sumo Square (2008 version) driver.

I switched to a SLIGHT game improvement iron for low to mid-handicappers (5-15), the Titliest AP-1. Within 3 rounds I hit my most GIR all year (12) - unfortunately the season is pretty much over here in NJ! It's definitely a switch worth making, IMHO.

I would recommend that you seek the help of your local club maker. He/she can fit you into the best performing irons you will ever play.I give you my word that custom fit and built golf clubs are the secret to consistent golf. Standard made golf clubs are not made in a consistent manner so you should not expect to swing them consistently.

If you just want to hit the ball straight and looks are not a factor, then of course super game improvement irons could be a good thing. But, I would recommend checking out many different models. Since you are a 10 you probably don't have much trouble getting the ball into the air and slicing the ball o.b. and many sgi sets have large amounts of offset and upright lie angles to counter those common high-handicap flaws. I would look into some game improvement irons that featured a good amount of perimeter weighting with less offset...something like the Callaway X-20 Tour as opposed to the Big Bertha for example.

    • I am semi-loyal. Usually buy four dozen of one ball and only play that until out and then determine whether to continue or try another one. Since starting my semi-loyal path to success, I've been playing the below, not in order: ProV1 ProV1x ProV1x left dash AVX Bridgestone BXS Srixon Z-star XV I am not sure if it has helped anything, but it gives a bit of confidence knowing that it at least is not the ball (while using the same one) that gives different results so one thing less to mind about I guess. On the level that I am, not sure whether it makes much difference but will continue since I have to play something so might as well go with the same ball for a number of rounds. Edit: favorite is probably the BXS followed by ProV1/Srixon Z-star XV. Haven't got any numbers to back it up but just by feel.
    • Will not do it by myself, going to the pro shop I usually use after Cristmas for input and actually doing the changes, if any, but wanted to get some thoughts on whether this was worthwhile out of curiosity.
    • In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.
    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
    • I think part of it is there hasn't been enough conclusive studies specific to golf regarding block studies. Maybe the full swing, you can't study it because it is too complicated and to some degree it will fall into variable or random.
