I've posted on here that I am going to replace my irons this winter. I've previously reviewed the Taylor Made R7 and Callaway X20. Both very nice clubs, and I hit them both well when compared to my current irons.

However, I recently started to look at the Cleveland Gold irons and wanted to see if there wasn't something there. My 56 degree wedge changed my game dramatically as did my Hi-Bore. I have confidence in the line, and believe that their irons can only be as good as the other clubs I've played. Being so much of this game is mental, I will at least hit them next time I'm at my local golf store but I wanted to get some opinions from those that already play them.

I'd appreciate any feedback.

your a 14 handicap, so you might be able to get away with the cg reds, which you will definetly prefer when you become better. Just a suggestion.

I have the r7's and i love them, they crush the ball for an iron, of course the strong lofts help as well. I would reccomend them, but as i said, now that im single digits, i want to go for more of a players club.

Ive played with the CG Golds for about a year, just got my new CG reds yesterday and took them to the range for the first time.

The reds I dont have enough experience with to quote on, but I have nothing but positive remarks for the CG golds. They helped me break 100, 90, and just recently shot a 78 with them. I switched to the Reds because I needed to go to a stiff shaft, and figured I could make the transition to the CG reds from the Golds easier than I could any other comparable iron due to the similarity.

Im a big fan of cleveland in general, who just dont seem to get the respect they should. Dont get me wrong Im not totally brand loyal at all. If something else comes out from a brand I dont play at all like Callaway I would jump ship in a heartbeat if I thought the product was superior. But save for the ball, cleveland delivers quality comparable with any other brand of golf at every level, and genrally cheaper than the competition as well.

I hadn't considered the reds. I did improve four strokes last season and since hanging up my hockey skates I've made golf my primary hobby. I anticipate improving another couple strokes this year as well.

I will try out both and see what I think, I appreciate the feed back here.

I tried the golds, reds were not on hand. I'm headed back after the first of the year to try the reds.

Ive played my first two rounds with the new Reds the last two days, and have posted my 2nd and 3rd low rounds ever. I would say if your already pretty decent go with the reds.

It was a toss-up between the reds and what I have in my sig last Christmas. While I don't regret my decision, I must say that I loved the reds and have always liked Cleveland clubs (played TA5's before these). I don't think you could possibly go wrong with the reds or the golds... of course if you think you'll be anywhere near a 10 or lower, the reds are probably more appealing. Only things I liked better about the Adams was the look and the ability to control ball flight a hair easier, but these are a little less forgiving too, so there is a trade-off. I also wanted to 2H and 3H... but again, it was a tough decision.

I had the golds all of this past season and really liked them. I did try the reds as well, but settled on the golds due to their slightly better game improvement benefits. Biggest reason for going with the golds was the flighted steel shafts. The kickpoints in the longer irons allows for a higher ball flight on the longer clubs. Shorter clubs were shafted similar to the reds, so the flights were approx the same. If you have a chance to try both, i would highly recommend it. I do not think you would be disappointed in either though. Good Luck.

OK update on the iron saga for those keeping score at home. :)

I went to a local golf store today and tried the following clubs in a 6i:
Callaway X22
Taylor Made Tour Burner
CG Gold
Mizuno MX200
CG Red

Firstly let me say that today's expedition was intended to make a final decision and purchase today. I left scratching my head and in awe of two clubs........anyone? anyone? Thats right! The MX-200 and the Tour Burner. Both share the common price point of $699, but the burners were on sale for $499 until their inventory was depleted. Not that price point matters in selection, but its good to know.

All that aside, I did enjoy the CG golds and CG reds, if I was going that road I would go with the golds still. I just don't feel my game is at the level of the reds. My mis-hit shots with the golds were still playable where as the red seems to be a little more demanding of a pure stroke. For now I think Cleveland will have to be content to be my choice in tee box and the wedge game, sorry Cleveland:(.

With that said, the offset of the burner gave me the perception that the club was slightly longer (or so I'm told). I had much better posture with that club, and most importantly did not feel like I had to work the club. Rather I just put a nice controlled swing on it and the club took care of the rest. Very forgiving. My balls I hit well with the 6i were past the 175yd flag, the softer ones settled in front the flag.

The Mizuno's I had heard a lot about on these forums and in the latest golf rags, but I had never personally hit one. I had planned to hit them, more or less as a formality to simply eliminate them from the group. In all honesty, I wasn't really intending to give them a fair shake but wanted to satisfy my golf brain. I can say that Mizuno is bar none the nicest club I have hit. Every single shot went right where I put it, trajectory was noticably lower than the burner and it was also a little shorter. However the accuracy was un-matched by any other club I hit today.

So my plan now is to go back in two weeks time without any form of payment (buyers remorse fits me like a glove) and hit 4i, 6i, PW of both the MX200 and the Tour Burner. I kind of feel like I am dragging my feet a bit, and I'm sure that the folks in the golf store are ready to kill me. Its an important purchase to decide on though, and I don't want to be hasty. This is going to be the set I play until I reach single digits, and I want to make sure I get the set that best fits me.

I need to get fit for my clubs, but my golf monger says to try off the rack clubs first and then they will make sure that the club is fit to me correctly. Seems a bit backwards to me, but I'm sure to have 20 questions on that as well. Thank you all for reading my novel, the golf gods will reward you with many birdies :)
