now that i have all of my christmas money burning a hole in my pocket, i want to go out and get a new hybrid. i was originally going to get the 2007 burner but i was looking around and saw the 2008 burner hybrids. are the 2008 clubs really that much of and improvement over the 2007s? are they worth the extra cash?

While I can't say for sure, the answer to the question of whether new clubs are "that much better" than year old clubs is almost always a resounding 'NO!'. Technology hasn't changed much (and probably not at all) from last year. One of the things I most hate about TaylorMade and Callaway is that they insist on marketing new clubs every year (and with TM, sometimes more than once a year, hence why many retailers also hate them). Most of the time these changes are marketing and cosmetic, but do not affect the playability or performance of the club.

I admit - I used to be a club ho and bought into the hype of new models, but have since backed off that (at least in part simply because of finances - if I had the money I'd be one of those club ho's again). I have come to realize that the changes seldom are worth the money, especially since you can often get the previous years model for 1/2 the price or new model (or even less on places like eBay).

The biggest reason I was always so big on buying the 'latest and greatest' was psychological. I just didn't want to take a chance that the older model was inferior to the new model. Finally, I've come to realize it's mostly just marketing. Frank Thomas (from The Golf Channel and most golf magazines) said a couple years ago that because USGA and R&A; have set hard equipment regulations, there can not be much improvement in the equipment on year-to-year basis, but companies must push new stuff to stay in business.

Personally I would go w/ the 2007 Burner because it is good technology for cheaper.

Though I haven't hit the hybrids - I have found the 2008 fairway woods to be better than than the 2007, the extra few quid is worth it.

My buddy has the old ones, I have the new ones. FWIW I much prefer the shape of the new ones, Im alot more comfortable with them. They are far more forgiving IMO. I do admit I fight a hook with them though when Im not swinging them well.

Clubs I havent thrown in a lake yet

Funny actually, I just went to golf galaxy to buy a hybrid and was deciding between the 07 and 08 burners. I went into the simulator and hit both and them felt ridiculously similar. The average distances were the same and i think I may have swung a wee bit faster with the 07. If I could somehow hit them both with a blindfold on I probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference. I ended up going with the 07 model cause it hit just as well as the 08 and was 50 dollars cheaper. Anyway that's just my 2 cents and you should probably try to hit both for yourself.
