I want to try out for my golf team at my school. However, I have played volleyball the past two years. I have been told that I am a shoe in for a starting varsity spot because I started last year. I didn't really like how things went last year. (Our varsity team was out worked by the JV team. We could have been so good, but many were lazy and didn't work. Our coach made some poor decisions according to most of the team. Etc.)

So, I have been thinking about trying out for golf instead of volleyball. I just need to know that I have a pretty good chance of making the team. I definately want to play a sport in the spring.

I shoot consistent 42-45 per nine. My average score has been an 87 for the past 30+- rounds. I occassionally 'blow up' with a 93 once every 10 rounds. What do you think my chances are? Do you think there is enough time to improve to the point where I would make the team (tryouts are in March)?

Any help appreciated. I'm a senior and have never tried out for the golf team before.

Well I would stick with volleyball, because your a senior so i assume you would have to try out for the varsity golf team, and with my varsity team at my school you have to average under 40 to make it. I still wouldn't rule it out though, what I would do is to find out what you have to shoot to make your varsity team. Then evaluate your decision.

Depends how good your golf team is. Do you know what you have to shoot to make the team? If you have no chance of making the team, stick with volleyball.

I would play whatever makes you most happy...

I played hockey and golf back in HS, but really only WORKED at hockey... I wish I would have started golf earlier, worked harder, and played in college.

What are your plans after HS... do you want to play either sport in college?

note: don't forget golf is NOT a sport! (at least that's what you said a while back) So, would you feel weird quiting a sport to play some hobby.

just for the record... I think golf IS a sport!

I know at our school (not one of the best golf schools) that you dont have to shoot a certain number, its just what happens with the rest of the field. Os i would say, try out for both. If you decide that you can have a decent VBall team thsi year, take that and run, if not, your still on the golf team.

That should be good enough for a high school team depending on the size of your school. If tryouts are in march, I would spend a lot of time with your wedges improving your short game, and def your putting, you will save the most pars by having a great short game. Get bored? Work your driver til its straight.

I gave up the whole golf not being a sport thing a while ago. I admit that I was wrong.

Thanks all for the advice. The problem with trying out for both is that the tryouts are the same day. I'm not sure if the tryouts are the same time.

Just ask some of the other players and find out from them what it might take to be on the team. Ask the coach what he/she thinks and get a feel for what will be expected of you. If it is a really competive team you might not have much of a shot. Although from what I seen in my local paper when it lists the HS golf results, there is usually one or two really good players a couple of above average and then a few just like yourself. So depending on the talent of the team you may be the 3 or 4 guy, or you might only get to play every once in a while. If you are really serious about golf, the practice time you get on a team is invaluable. Getting to play or practice everyday will really help your game.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

My response is the along the same lines as everyone else. I suggest you go and have a talk with the coach. Most high school coaches understand and appreciate when student athletes talk to them about these sort of things. You could also ask him if there are things that you can be doing (drills, workout program, etc.) to get ready for try outs. I never played for my high school golf team, really wish I had tried though. Without getting too crazy here, there is a saying that goes along the lines of "I have no regrets about anything I have done, but I do regret the things I didn't do". Go for it!!!

Well I am actually on our school golf team, and it really depends on how good your golf team is and what the coach is like. Our school is pretty sucky at every sport, except baseball (we rank in the top ten nationally in baseball, i believe) I was able to join the team midway through the season. The coach had me hit a few balls on the range and he didn't believe I had taught myself golf in 6 months and had a swing like that. I ended up only playing one match and I did terrible. I will have to wait till next year to play again since the season ended already so I have the remainder of this school year and the summer to sharpen my game. Judging from your scores, you seem to be alot better than I am, so I think you should go for it and give it a shot. Looks good on your transcripts even if you don't play college golf.

Try out for golf and make the team. Golf is a life time game that you will appreciate for almost forever. Practice your short game everyday including your putting and you will make the team. Once you are on the team, you can help but get better because you will practice almost everyday and play competitively during the golf season.

good luck to you.

my son is a freshman and he is going to try out for his high school golf team in February when his basketball season is over. I can't wait.

    • I have been debating getting a launch monitor of some sort, if only so I can re-figure my shot zones (I haven't actually mapped them in years) and also to practice distance wedges at home.  I have to see if this works with either my current setup, or what my setup would be if I move it to the garage.
    • Day 48, June 23.  After work today, I took 25 minutes in my practice room;  6-iron, same everything as yesterday except the time and count.
    • Well, this is interesting.  I think we discovered a few months ago that I haven't been following professional golf in a while (my confusion about Scotty's footwork confirmed that), so at least as I aim to follow a bit more I'll get something new to learn with all of you.  My very quick read of Erik's summary makes me think this new Challenger series fits somewhere between Korn Ferry and the Championship (not Champions, but I know I'm going to make that mistake a few times if I'm not careful!).   My recollection is that there were already second-tier events among the PGA Tour;  the Bob Hope didn't have the same quality of field as the event at Riviera (whose current name I forget, although now that I say that, I realize the Palm Springs event hasn't been called the Bob Hope in a few years either).   With the absence of the FedEx (if I'm reading that correctly), does that mean no more FedEx Cup at all? Hopefully I'll have time later in 2026 to sit down and see what we're in for in 2027, where one of my goals already is to follow more professional golf.
    • The highlights as I see them: Championship and Challenger Series The creation of the PGA Tour and the PGB Tour, in the words of Joel Dahmen a few years ago. They're calling them the Championship Series (23-24 events) and the Challenger Series (20+ events). Both run February to August. They feel this will achieve three things: increasing the consistency and quality of fields across the season creating a clear system for players to earn and retain status and delivering a more structured and competitive experience for fans and partners—all in an effort to strengthen meritocracy. Championship Series Structure and Eligibility The 23-24 events includes the Players, majors, season-ending events, and the Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup. These will be 72-hole events with a 36-hole cut to the top 65 and ties and purses of $20M+. 120 players without an alternate list. 90 players (roughly) from the previous year and 20 players promoted from the Challenger Series. Full eligibility will be finalized later this year. Sites (cities) to be finalized soon, but 10 of the 15 courses have already been determined. Postseason: includes retention and relegation and concludes with match play. The Tour Championship will also be played across a rotation of prestigious courses. Challenger Series Structure and Eligibility 20+ events. Running concurrently. Will feature players fighting their way back to the Championship Series or players graduating and on the upswing from the Korn Ferry Tour. Many of these events will be current PGA Tour courses. About 7 of the Challenger Series events will be during off weeks for the Championship Series with elevated purses and visibility. Purses of at least $4M, with cuts similar to the Champ series. 144 player fields. Competitive Fields for Both Series Players will be eligible for only one series at a time: Championship Series Players are not eligible for Challenger Series events. Championship Series members will have a known schedule with all events having the same eligibility. Players and Majors will have their own eligibility criteria. Championship Series players don't have to play all events. This begs the question about, say, the Canadian Open, and other "home-town" events that players might want to play, even if they're Challenger Series events. Will releases be granted? Promotion and Relegation At least 90 players will be retained in the Championship Series, and 20 players will be promoted from the Challenger Series each year. Battlefield promotion for two-time winners from the Challenger Series. Players relegated from the Championship Series will have a "last chance" opportunity to retain status, or will go to the Challenger Series. Criteria will be finalized before the start of the 2027 season. Points System New points system (not FedExCup points). Separate points systems for the Championship and Challenger Series. Elevated points in the Challenger Series for off-weeks on the Championship Series. More details tk. Elevated International Events in the Fall The fall schedule will include a limited series of elevated international events with top players from the Championship Series, with the intent to deliver in partnership with the DP World Tour as part of the Strategic Alliance. Last Chance Series The Tour will develop a “last chance” series of 4-6 events in the fall, with a limited number of spots on the Championship Series available for top finishers. Eligibility will include players relegated from the Championship Series, Challenger Series players, and other categories to be determined. Q-School continues, as do the Korn Ferry Tour and PGA Tour Latinoamerica. Also, Brian Rolapp is the new commissioner as of January 1, 2027.
