Fred Couples and the 1998 Hope Classic

What a treat to watch again the 1998 Bob Hope Classic tonight on the golf channel. Bruce Litsky was leading by one on the par 5 18th and Freddie Couples hits a great long second on the green to birdie and tie. First playoff hole, the 18th again, and Freddie hits another almost mirror image second, this time long, but chips up and birdies to win. Both of Litsky's putts lipped, but Couples used his usual flowing power to birdie back to back... Even if you did not know the outcome, you sort of knew he would birdie both times. I love watching his tempo. His swing is so unique that almost any golfer seeing it from a distance would say, "That is Fred Couples."

It was cool watching that again this morning.

I remeber seeing the live coverage of this. Freddie's swing was and still is smooth as silk.

I love Freddie's swing. Wish I could duplicate it myself. A friend of mine went to a golf school and the first day they told the students that if they had a favorite pro's swing that they liked, the instructors would try to help them emulate it. My bud said, "Fred Couples", to which the instructor replied immediately, "Pick someone else!, nobody can do that."
