I was inspired by a thread on regripping clubs. I tried to do it myself. In doing so, I would like to use a vice. The one that I have access to is the 3 inch type. I clamp it to my kitchen table! The problem that I had was with the rubber clamp. The clamp touched the vice only at one point because when the club was in it, the clamp opened like a 'V'. I wasn't sure how much pressure to apply on the vice, so as not to damage the shaft. I applied the amount that I was comfortable with, but then the club would still come out of the vice. Has anyone else had problems with the rubber clamp/vice set-up? I know that it can be done without a vice, although I would like to be able to use the one that I have, (if not I'll take it back). I wonder if a larger table mounted vice is necessary. Thanks.

The rubber shaft clamps do form a "V" when they have a club in them. If you grip it closer to the head, it won't form as much of a "V", but you would lose some control.

When I regripped a couple of my clubs, I tightened the vice pretty tight. It was tight enough so that I could not rotate the club in it.

I don't think you would have much of an issue with damaging a steel shaft. Graphite is another story, but steel is ridiculously hard. I made a wedge a couple weeks ago. The excess that I cut off, I put into a vice and tried to break it. Long story about why I needed to break it, but it would not break. It was a DGS300, just like what you have in your irons.

Is a bench mounted vice, not a small 3 inch, the difference in holding power? I have seen the clamp just placed down in between the vice grip giving strong hold without many tightening turns. With my vice the rubber clamp has an overhang that sits on the top of the vice grip. It just didn't grip. I haven't ventured into bone-crushing land with many tightening twists. Has anyone used a 3 inch type vice or any woodworking vice that is convenient for use on a kitchen table?
