You ignore the fact that thousands of golf courses are now obsolete and maintenance costs have doubled during the time you cite. I hope you see the logical fallacies of you weak arguments. Today's equipment is lowered the decades long tradition of shot making. Hogan, Snead, Nelson, Jones and others are rolling in their graves. The damn ball barely curves anymore and 60 somethings are driving 300 plus yards. Do you best to justify these facts if you must, but you are holding an empty sack.

On average, amateur golfers are still only driving about 215 yards.  That hasn't made any course I play obsolete.

That is a completely made up stat and untrue. You shouldn't do that. I play with all handicap levels and 240 -250 is the lowest. Be honest guy. I looked up the stats and average statistically for males is 235 at the low end and 270 toward the top. 250+ mean which is higher than pros in 40's through 80's. Get a clue. Don't create a argurment that embarrasses yourself. Duh.

From the R&A;

Each season since 1996 we have been gathering driving distances from players with a range of handicaps and the average driving distance in 2012 for this cohort was 208 yards compared to 200 yards in 1996; an increase of 8 yards. The largest change over the 17 seasons has been the number of higher handicap golfers choosing to use drivers from the tee in our measurements. Back in the 1990s the percentage usage for the highest handicap group was 55% and this has risen to a figure in excess of 90% since around 2005, which is presumably associated with enhanced forgiveness. Using driver-only data the increase in driving distance from 1996 to 2012 is only 3 yards.

I know the stat is from 2012, but this thread was necro'd from 2009.

i have to disagree.  Sure i have seen my 30 handicap buddy hit it 270, but that isn't taking in to account the 5 balls he hit 100-200 yards due to tops, weak slices, etc.  you have to remember that all those 100 yard topped balls add to the average as well.  i average 260, which according to you would be middle of the road.  I've rarely met anybody that can hit the ball further than I can on a regular basis, and I've played with a lot of strangers.

Not made up.  Just recently posted on another forum, stats from the US, and then another guy posted stats from the R&A.;  You must play in a very select crowd. :whistle:

My best drives are in the 235-240 range (and I play at 4000 feet altitude and higher most of the time), and they go down from there.  I'm about as long as anyone I play with on a regular basis.  I play with guys in their 50's to guys in their 80's.  The other day I played with a guy who was 26 and I hit it as far as he did, and I'm 68.  I recently played with a group of 30 something low handicappers, and most of them bombed it, but I expected them to.  They weren't average golfers.
