Titleist 909 D2 vs. D3 on tour

Does anyone know the current estimate of tour players that use the D2 compared to the D3? While listening to the old podcast for the 909 drivers, I was suprised to hear that many more tour players had adopted the D2 over the D3. I figured the lower launch and lower spin of the D3 would appeal more to the players than the D2. Does anyone know if that's still the case, and is there a reason they would prefer the D2?

I cant see a reason why any of them would be using the D2. Lowering lanunch and spin is a big concern for most of those dudes. Im sure a couple of players use the D2, but i imagine most of their tour staff uses the D3 regardless of what any stat says.

Think you're missing out on a few things.

1) With the driver, they typically want a higher ball flight. "Run" isn't something the pros worry about. 2) The shaft - or an 8.5 degree head - can do a lot to lower ballflight and/or reduce spin. Titleist's numbers are likely pretty accurate. They probably aren't lying to you - they have no reason to lie.

According to the WITB section of Titleist's website , there are actually many tour players using the D3. Stricker, Scott (recently changed), Martin Kaymer, Ben Curtis, Davis Love III all play the D3. McIlroy and Zach use the D2.

Oops, I didn't mean for my response to demonstrate that more players use the D3. I was just surprised that not too long ago, players like Kaymer and Love were playing the D2 and now they aren't. But then again, if you go down the list, Hoffman and Watney play D2s as well.

The list is more recent than the podcast, though. Perhaps it was 50/50, and now it's 65/35 or something.

It finaly makes sense why the 909 D2 fits me!! I thought the D3 would have been better but the D2 was. I say this makes sense because I theoretically use the same type of swing as him(MEGSA-

I work for a golf shop, and am privvy to some inside information from our reps. Here's the results of the Darrell survey from this year's Sony Open in Hawaii. As you can see, the D3 is more used than the D2, but only marginally.
Like any club, it has to do with what they feel comfortable with, but launch characteristics have a lot to do with it too.

That was a tour issue club. From what I can gather it has somewhat of a cult following through. I believe that is a 425cc head.

Yes you could say cult following. I better looking D2? I was in. Unfortunatly the only time i ever hit one, the guy wanted 600 for it.. and that is actually a decent price for it :(
