I have had a chance to hit the new r7 steel fairway metal and really like it. The first thing that jumped out at me was the high ball flight even off the fairway. The good thing is that it didn't seem to flutter much, but produced a penetrating flight. Compared to my old Steelhead, it was carrying an extra 10-15 yards (around 235-245).

The other nice thing, aside from the added distance, is that I could control the shot better as well. I never hit a wild hook or slice once. Most shots were easily within 15-20 yards of where I was aiming.

Heck, I even like how it feels on setup. Sure the face is closed a bit (this is a non-TP version), but because I'm using the r7 driver now, I'm used to it and have adjusted slightly to the club.

When I did miss, it was left, but that is most likely from the draw-biased face. I'm going to switch the weights to neutralize it and see if that makes the difference. I'll post back when I have more info.

All in all, it is a very nice club. I love the new Fujikura REAX shafts in TaylorMade's woods. This is the first fairway metal that I've hit in 5 years to knock my 6 year old Steelhead (temporarily) out of the bag. Great job TaylorMade...

Dave, supposedly the face is square but it's heel weighted a little. Putting the weights in 2-14 (heel/toe) neutralizes everything to give you a "square" club.

My results with the r7 steel weren't as hot at first. Again, 2/14. Downwind the thing flew forever, but I saw a lot of ballooning (Pro V1x, not V1) into the wind. It's been pretty windy here lately, but any ballooning from a 3W is too much in my opinion.

Put the weights in 8-8 today to produce a mildly heel-weighted club. I hit everything on a great trajectory, very far, and exactly where I was looking...... and then ten yards left of that. In other words, 8-8 is perfect... but I have to aim 10 yards right to adjust for the slight tug left the not-quite-neutral weighting produces.

Still undecided whether I like this club or the r7 TP FW wood more ... but this one seems to be a little easier to hit off the fairway. A little shallower face, perhaps...
