By hosting a tournament, and getting paid by CBS and the handful of sponsors, they have transcended the "Private Club" realm. Let them host a tournament that is not televised; they can have their own private party; who cares.

I'm lost here already. What does the Masters have to do with ANGC's membership policies? It's held at ANGC, but the Masters is open to the public. Women attend on a regular basis, women caddy, and women are eligible to participate on the same basis men are. The Masters is rather egalitarian.

They promote themselves as one of the institutions of golf soaking up all the historical metaphors and basking in people gushing about their contributions to the game.

Do you deny their claim to being one of these?

So what you are saying is let's give them a free pass for their duplicity simply because they can hide behind the private club clause.

What have they done that qualifies as duplicity?

Come on dude, the Nazi's just wanted a pure race.

I think we can just invoke Godwin's Law instead of pretending you're a rational person on this matter.

I wish some of these pros had to guts to be invited but decline on the basis of a club that has no moral center.

Are you in Miss Burk's camp, wondering why the Masters can't just be held somewhere else?

It is clear that unless you agree with the majority you will be judged as irrational in this post. Someone once called it groupthink, but I am betting you will find that irrational also.

No, the comment about irrationality was directly aimed at your comparison to the Nazis. The rest of your post is something with which I disagree, but don't see as irrational.

i take it then that you think "

No. Not at all.

My quote refered to the exclusion of membership based on gender being wrong, when, and only when, there is no other public or private alternative. To put it simply. 'Shapes Fitness' can do whatever they want, until all the other gyms in the area close.

there are other country clubs in Augusta that do allow women

In fact, there is one adjacent to Augusta National.

My point is that it is not immoral for Augusta to exclude women from its membership, but that it IS immoral to exclude women from golf itself.

Who cares?? If they don't want women then thats up to them. Its a private club. IMO writing an article about it is just stirring up trouble that doesn't need to be.

that part of your argument doesnt make sense either. women are allowed to play at Augusta. they just have to be accompanied by a member. anything else?

You are way over the edge and are making arguments that are nonsensical at this point.

Invoking Nazi's is just plain stupid. You basically call the pros gutless for not declining to participate, but you've started another thread about your opinions on the Masters broadcast. A lot easier for you to turn off the TV and be morally consistent and you don't, so I wouldn't think players should be held to a higher standard than you hold yourself to. I think you have defined duplicity.

Fair warning to others who try to draw parallels in this thread that does not match the groupthink that is pervasive. This is way too much verbal abuse to take for having a different opinion. But I notice that in all your threads; so I am just considering the source.

Nothing abusive at all or ever, you are clearly wrong (and overly sensitive) on that one, but you are "busted" on this one. Based on your posts you should be begging to have your eyes poked out before you would support Augusta National by watching the broadcast.

It's a private club. They are not bound to any of the rules of inclusion of public places. While it may be unfortunate, they can do whatever they want. It does not seem to hurt attendance at the Masters nor has it slowed down the desire of many to become members.

Picked the above quote but many others make the same point.

I would agree with the "a private club can do what they like" except for the fact that they hold a prestigious Championship. In fact, if they are to hold any PGA-sanctioned event then I don't think this is a tenable position to hold. If they want to come off the PGA roster and just be an exclusive private club then so be it, but I think their stance should be challenged as it stands now.

Fair statement, and the PGA Tour does not allow events anymore at private clubs which discriminate in race or religion (not sure of the bounds of that if there are any, i.e., policy vs. unwritten rule = no such members).

It will probably never extend that to sex because of the Masters, and is certainly exposed on that front.

    • Ooh, I don't know about that. I've hit flop shots that are 6-7° down. The more you widen the spin loft the less ball speed you put into the ball.

    • Can't brag about a 50 last night but it was the best round of my season (4 rounds of 9 holes) so I am not as upset as I could be.  One thing I am noticed is that I got a little more confident in my long hybrids and I attempted a couple longer shots that typically I would just lay up and those holes were a big part of the lower score.  Not every shot was great but good enough that they helped.  I even shot par on a Par 5 after taking a drop.  On that hole I would usually lay-up to @ 100 yards and often miss the green altogether with my 3rd shot (or worse chunk my approach and put it in the waste area).  Yesterday I went for it from @ 200 yards out with wind in my face and landed in the waste area short of the green.  My drop left @ 40 yards in and I stuck it to 3 feet for my par putt.  If I had laid up I would have avoided the penalty stroke but likely would not have been on the green in regulation and may still have been working for par.  By going for it I gave myself a chance at birdie and still saved par. I do not plan on being crazy aggressive but I think I tend to be too conservative at times so I will "go for it" a little more often going forward.
    • Day 14 (15 May 24) - Worked with the SW in the backyard, short pitches from 10yds up to 30yds.   Focused on ball placement in stance - ball back, ball forward, ball center.  Afterwards moved to inside the shop to work on putting pace on the rug - putting one way gives about an 8' putt, going the other a 6' before bumping onto the adjacent rug.  Focused there on the line - picking a target point about 18"-24" out and making sure the ball rolls through that point.
