Right now I own a good 58 degree that I need to keep. I'm planning to buy two more wedges. What combo should I buy? And is a 54 degree much like a 56?
Also, if I get a 50 degree, isn't that awfully close to my pitching wedge (48)?

My ideal set of wedges would be 52* for approach shots that are too short for a PW and too long for a SW. 56* for your normal range sand wedge and 60* for flopping and near chipping. But that's only me.

If you want to keep the 58, you could go with a 53 in the middle of your PW and LW. I know Mizuno makes a 53 (and Cleveland used to). I just had a similar problem with wedge gaps and ended up with a 47 (PW in set), 51 and 56. I have a 58, but have found I do not need it with the 56 because it's very easy to open up. I also have an old 60 which I could use if I ever feel so inclined to add it back into the bag. I found I would rather have some longer clubs than carry 4 wedges when the LW was only being used for special cirmcumstances (I basically never used it for full swing shots). 3 wedges cover all of my short yardages (125 and less).

Yeah I have a 53 currently, but I need to get rid of it. How is a 52 56 and 58?

That would be a stupid idea, because the gap between a 56 and 58 would only be around 7 or 8 yards full swing. Just get a 54 with your 58. You dont need to barry around 4 wedges, 3 is fine. It is important to have some feel in your short game which the 4 wedge setup lacks, because you can get away without shoking up and half swinging.

I guess. So, It's between a 54 and a 52. I think I'll go with a 54 because that would get me to about 100 yard full swing. Chipping with it might be nice also.

OP, are you the guy that was talking about getting the Stan Utley book? If so, I think he hits all of his short game shots with a 58 doesn't he?

Correct, that was me. 58 has been a great club. I just need another club to replace my 53 and I think I will get a cg14 54 degree, maybe.

Gotcha. If I were you and I was going to keep the 58 and my PW was 48, I would go with a 54. I carry a 52, 56, and 60. I have thought about going with a 58 instead of the 56 and 60 but haven't made my mind up yet. The 4 wedge thing is all preference. Just because you carry four wedges doesn't mean you have less feel. I carry 4 because of distances. I can hit my 60 degree a smooth 65 yards. I can hit my SW a smooth 85. I can hit my GW a smooth 115. And my PW goes a smooth 125-130. The reason I choose these is because the course I play, I always end up with these yardages. If I would get rid of the 54 and 60 then I would have the 52 going 115 and the 58 going around 75. That is a gap of 40 yards. It just depends on the personal preference.

Paddy,

When you went to a 58* did it also become your go to sand club and if so how much bounce are you using on that wedge? I'm thinking about a 46, 52, 58 (and yes 64 for now) and making the 58 my main sand club (as well as chipping wedge). I've always played 55/56* in a high bounce. It seems your 54 58 idea will work well. If you really need to split hairs later you can always bend your 54 strong.

I have a 52 and 58. I like the 52 degree for 100 yards and in and 58 is great for around the greens. I just switched from a combo of 52,56,60 and like the 58 because it simplifies things.

I love my 58. I used it today a bunch. I'm not sure the bounce, but I can hit every kind of shot with it. The 54 will be perfect because it will go 100 exactly.
I will just have to learn to hit my pitching wedge close. Thanks guys.

By the way, not sure about the bounce, but it works well in the sand. I recommend one.

    • Day 38 (18 Dec 25) - got out in the backyard with grandson this afternoon.  We got into a little game of pitching the ball from about 25yds to a target point just off the asphalt lane behind the backyard.  Goal - just clear it with a quick hop and stop.  Focused on using the wedge swing motion I was talking with the course pro yesterday….smooth and thru just bruising the grass.  In addition to a concentrated focus on technique, it also called for a quiet mind locked in on target point.  Rehearsed this with both the 50° and 55° wedges.
    • I listened to the Shaun Webb one about the swing coach app. Sounds like a great thing and will (hopefully) be very useful for me. I do think the hosts are underestimating where AI could be in a few years. Right now it's just regurgitating stuff that it has been told or it has scrubbed from somewhere else and a human guiding things will be quite a lot more helpful than just the AI, but it's going to keep developing and it will reach the stage where it's figuring this stuff out on its own. Time will come when it will have you do a TPI style screen and take various height/arm length/leg length etc. measurements, have you tell it some history and your time constraints and goals and what not and it will watch a video of your swing face on and DTL and it will know exactly what you need to work on.
    • I found it entertaining, but the announcing was lousy.  How did the measuring on the final shot start with Rory being closer and being told he won, and then with no explanation it turns out Scottie won?  Weird.
