I'm going to Myrtle Beach with a few friends in a couple weeks and we want to squeeze in a round. Any suggestions? We don't want to spend a fortune, maybe 40-90 bucks. Man O'War look pretty wild!

There are so many courses to pick from.....

I like Myrtle Beach National. They have 3 courses, Kings North is the flagship for that facility it's very nice, you better call though, depending on your schedule it may be a budget buster.

We just got back last month, we stayed and played at the Legends, another nice facility.

Your golfing may be influenced by what part of town your staying, some courses can be quite the drive.

I played Man O War a few years back, believe it or not, I can't remember a thing about the course. It's either not that memorable, or I'm losing my mind.

Only one round?? Enjoy!

Glen Dornoch, by far my favorite course I have played there (played it 7 times), it is up in the Northen part, right by NC and SC border. Price range is right in your area last I was there, it was like 40 or 45 afternoon rate. Its a great course, you have to be very accurate.

No, it's not that memorable, OK, but there's definately better for that price range. Actually it is "memorable" in that it has tons of water, but nothing special... so maybe you ARE losing your mind too.

agree 100%... the Witch is the best of the 3 courses owned by that same group, and it was great. It is also the most difficult, yet I shot my best round there. If you don't shoot in the low 90's or better, you might struggle a bit there though. My brother-in-law didn't like it as much as I did because he was getting his as$ kicked by the course. Also, saw a few gators there, that was cool.

If only playing one course, and could squeeze out a few extra bucks... I'd do Caledonia (not sure how much it would run, maybe way too much?). check this link for some ideas... http://www.golfdigest.com/rankings/c...yrtlebeach1105

on a college budget i'd agree with everyone on man o war. they have bent greens and bermuda fairways. same with the witch, and the wizard. all are part of the same golfing group so i'm sure if you do so searching online you can find a good deal to play these three. also go in to Martins golf superstore next to broadway at the beach they have a stand in the front of the store with deals all over myrtle beach. also ask if you can pay the locals rate. the golf industy in myrtle is slacking and courses will give deals more often these days.

My father and I played this course a few years ago....nice course. I liked the Wizard even better....however my iron shots were dialed in nicely that day.

We also played the Long Bay Club and Kings North. We didn't get a chance to play the sister course of Man-O-War & The Wizard....The Witch. I definitely want to play this one when we go back. They routinely run package deals on these three for great rates and excellent replay rates. I would suggest Man-O-War as the first course to play...great for a tune up to prepare you for the rest.

The greens at the Witch were NOT bermuda.

A quick visit to their website reveals the greens there are "tift dwarf"

By the way The Witch is an excellent play and far better than Man of War. The suggestion for Glen Dornoch is very good. Since you are on the north end, Crow's Creek just over the line in NC is really nice and has great turf conditions.

And if I am not mistaken Tiff Dwarf is a variation of Bermuda is it not?

A little research shows that it is a strain of bermuda... but I don't remember them playing like bermuda greens. Maybe I'm losing my mind? I appologize and stand corrected.

I have been to Myrtle Beach 4 or 5 times with friends. We enjoyed most of the courses. The ones we liked best were:
Man O'War
Panthers Run
Wicked Stick
Prestwick
We still have many to play before rendering final judgement.

Shamsone you liked Avocet? Was it in good shape?I own property on the 5th hole of the Hummingbird course at Wild Wing.It used to be the nicest complex in all of Myrtle till the Benton Bros got a hold of it and wrecked it.

Caledonia is a great course, probably a bit expensive, but worth it. Seriously one of my favorite courses I have ever played. Look into a twilight rate and it gets more reasonable.

yeah avocet is in prime conditions right now. played with another single(that was from the northeast) and he said it's the best course he's played from so far. also i heard wildwing had like 3 or 4 courses but now all they have is advocet and the humming bird.

    • ..maybe 1 shot HC change might be a good starting point..
    • Yeah, I have a similar view. I was in the team of 2 and we got down 5 after 5. Get 1 pt if win the hole - whatever that game is called. We lost it 3 down with 2 to play so almost saved it. After the first hole when the single did a putt, then dropped a second ball, made a slight adjustment and sunk it, we thought it wasn't right. We couldn't do anything with handicaps etc so we just made them wait between putts - usually just one of us to putt. We were a 23 and 25 handicappers (probably playing to about 28) and the single was a 16 handicapper, but somehow had a HC of 20 (so that is 1 HC pt already). In terms of making it fair, and changing HC (HC1 + HC2 / 4), I think maybe adding 2 HCs to the double (or taking 2 HC off the single (after the adding and div by 4) might make it fair. Also maybe making a rule that the single couldn't change clubs for the second hit. Hard to say from that one game but possibly: - 2 shot HC adding - can't change clubs for second shot - need to have other team putt in between their 2 putts   Not sure. Do you think you'd still win or have these rules made it unfair the other way? Cheers for thoughts..
