I don't own a rule book and just take from what other people tell me. I'm trying to keep an accurate handicap so the right rules should be played. Some rule questions.

#1 - Do you only drop when you land in a lateral water hazard? The ball is dropped where the ball enters the OB?

#2 - When playing a provisional off the tee due to the ball going OB, are you hitting 3 off the tee with the provisional?

#3 - Let's say your not on the tee but on the fairway and you hit a shot that you think may be OB, do you drop another ball and hit it as a provisional?

For now, that's all the rule questions I have. Can't remember them at the moment.

I like the HTML version of the rules for looking up specific questions:

Rules of Golf (HTML)

Answers to questions:
#1: You should look this up.
#2: Yes you are hitting 3 if your tee shot is OB.
#3: You can hit a provisional whenever in doubt about being OB or lost ball. Be sure you can differentiate the 2nd ball by marking it or using a different number than original shot.

Yeah, I thought that was what DBake had linked to (I didn't actually click it). I'd be willing to bet that I'm on that site at least once a day, every day. I also have the R&A; rules site bookmarked too.

Here is a link for a 'quick reference' rules book that is very easy to understand and find rulings. It's only $10 and is small enough to carry in your bag (it's also waterproof). Definitely worth buying:

http://www.amazon.com/Golf-Rules-Qui...ref=pd_sim_b_8

If it's sold out at Amazon just do a Google search for it. Several online golf retailers also have this book for sale.

When its plugged on the fairway, I just hit as is. I have yet to play a course with a lateral water hazard on a par 4 or 5. Usually if there is a water hazard its on a par 3 where I just re tee and take a 1 stroke penalty. I've not played many variety of courses since I started last year.
