Quick question:

How long is a standard wedge. Lob, Sand, and Gap?

Reason I ask, I have over length clubs, maybe 1.5" or so but can't remember exactly as it has been sometime. I don't have access to a fitter where I am currently living (island). I am ordering some Cleveland wedges from Golfsmith and they can order them over length and with my upright 2 degrees, but I need to verify what length my current clubs are (compared to standard) before ordering. Anyone know the "standard length of these clubs? Any help greatly appreciated.

My 56º is 35". My PW is 35.75, so my gap is somewhere between the two. Don't have a lob.

One other question for anyone feeling patient...

I see many choices for shafts with the Golfsmith "Smart Fit". Below are the choices. Does anyone suggest a shaft other than the standard Cleveland shaft? Below are the choices...

Mid launch- Precision tour flighted rifle steel for extra $10
Mid launch- Cleveland traction steel standard and zero extra charge
Mid launch- Precision rifle steel extra $10
Variable launch- Project X flighted steel extra $25

Other options were for low launch shafts, but I don't think I want low launch. Anyone have rationale for low launch, please tell me.

Thanks for any info guys and I appreciate your patience.

Ordering tonight if I can figure this out.

Just occurred to me...

I don't know how to measure my wedges. Do you lie them staight on the table or against the wall and do an over all length measurement, or should they be angled as if you were holding them addressing a ball? Not sure how to measure mine to compare against the "standard".

Just now, measuring longways down the club, from longest point of grip to longest point on clubhead, I am getting 38" total length. Not sure I am doing this right. Any thoughts?

Another thing I noticed, my L-S-G are all the same length. Exactly. Shouldn't there be a graduation in length as I go from L to S to G?

You want to measure as if at address, on a straight line down the shaft to the ground, not to the toe.

Thanks. I appreciate it. By that standard, mine are all 37" long. So 1.75-2.0 inches over length depending on the source for "standard" being 35.0" or 35.25". I have read both online.

Anyone have a suggestion on which shaft to get and why? That is the only thing I need to figure out at this point. As usual, thanks for any help.

Below are the options on Golfsmith "Smart Fit" page...

Mid launch- Precision tour flighted rifle steel for extra $10
Mid launch- Cleveland traction steel standard and zero extra charge
Mid launch- Precision rifle steel extra $10
Variable launch- Project X flighted steel extra $25

    • Thanks but honestly… I don't know any other way. I don't mind being wrong so long as I know where to go from there. I don't like being wrong — I'd love to get things right (which is different than "being right"). I recommend grabbing a furniture slider or a paper plate or something, and doing something like this: First, make a swing where you let your trail foot swing out as you turn, then twist that foot back in. From DL and FO, it'll look like this: Then, during a regular backswing, try to twist your foot in slightly (demonstrated in the left image): You'll notice a crease along the trail side of your hip, your pelvis will "fold" into that thigh (internal rotation of the hip joint), and your "bits" will be squished a little between your pelvis and your thigh. Ben Hogan said once: "At the top of the back swing the groin muscle on the inside of your rt [sic] leg near your right nut will tighten," Hogan wrote. "This subtle feeling of tightness there tells you that you have made the correct move back from the ball." I don't know about that, but you will probably feel something down around that area.
    • Yep. I think it will start to feel even more athletic when we start on the downswing stuff later.  I know, it's just I want to be younger so I have more time to enjoy the changes. 🙂
    • I need to drop a couple of stone. 🙂 😛    Yep. Yeah, but in the end, it feels more athletic, like you're actually using your legs, yeah? As you know… we use the best available info we have. Like others, I was fooled a little by 2D images for awhile (moving or still). Unlike others, I've learned and grown and moved on since then, while they're still looking at their images (often from lousy camera angles).
