I have narrowed down my new iron search between the Taylormade r7 Irons (not the r7 draw) and the Callaway X-22 irons. Which do you all believe I should go with and why? Anyone who has hit either one of these please fill me in on your input etc. If you're just going to say go with whichever you hit better then please add a little more input

I have been looking on eBay as well and the price difference from reputable sellers isn't much. Looks to be $350 for r7's and $425 for X-22's. Considering the r7's are $399.99 and X-22's are $699.99 paying an extra $75 for normally $300 difference isn't bad to me. And yes, I know the X-22 set is only 5-PW and r7 is 4-PW but I never use a 3 or 4 iron and use a hybrid instead.

buy whichever you hit better... just joking, but not really. That is good advice.

Personally I think the 22's are huge and have way too thick a topline while the r7 are slightly less obnoxiously large... but I think both sets are a little on the ugly side. Too much graphics on both. I would go with the X-forged or the TP MB smokes.

Hey, you said not to just say buy what you hit best... so there's my honest opinion, SGI irons and big GI irons look like shite to me with the crazy graphics, wide soles, and huge offset.
My Clubs: Callaway FT-i Tour LCG 9.5° w/ Matrix Ozik Xcon 6 stiff; Sonartec GS Tour 14° w/ Graphite Design Red Ice 70 stiff; Adams Idea Pro 2h(18°) & 3h(20°) w/ Aldila VS Proto 80 stiff; Adams Idea Pro Forged 4-PW w/ TT Black Gold stiff; Cleveland CG12 DSG RTG 52°-10° & 58°-10°; Odyssey...

I'm gaming the X-22 since 2 months and I love them. Sure, they look a little bit clunky and the top-line is quite thick. But they are very forgiving, have a quite good feel and really good distance.

I like the uniflex steel shaft too, it fits my swing really good. Last two rounds with them were a 86 and 87 For me, the shaft tends to be between regular and stiff, not as whippy as lady shafts or something equal.

I've hit the Ci7, but for me, the X-22 were easier to hit. Unfortunately I have never demoed the R7 so I can't say anything about those sticks.

Well if you decide to get the X-22, it seems like it goes for $480 for 4-PW on eBay.

I have to say, by far one of the top 5 worst things to look for in clubs. aesthetics...who the heck cares what it looks like if you can hit it well? graphics?...sorry but i had to get that off my chest

I'd suggest finding a set at a range, hitting your best club (most people it's a 6,7 iron) for about 20 balls or so, hit about 10 with each other one, mixing it up as you go for instance 6 or 7, 8,5,9,4,6 or 7, etc. so you get a general feel for all the clubs, if you hit each one over and over you won't get a feel for what it'd be like on the course pulling a different one out of the bag after each shot. It'll help you get a better idea of the versatility and playability (for your own shot). Personally i've hit both, if i had the money i'd be trying to get a set of TM R7 TP's tomorrow if i could. The x22's are nice and feel like butter but i like to work my irons and they don't really do much, very forgiving. just MHO

Try the tour version of the X-22's.

My friend has the TM's, I've tried them and am NOT a fan. He on the other hand, likes them mucho. Secretly though, I think he wishes he had my clubs....

Thanks for all the input. It seems like everywhere I look it's 50/50 for liking and disliking both sets of clubs so it may come down to whichever I like a little more.

That's a great idea just may be a little difficult for me to achieve

My dad has the R7 TP, which I assume are at least similar to the regular R7 irons, and they feel great when I hit them. One of my friends has X-20s, however, but the feel isn't quite a great, and they're uglier IMO.

if you are just looking for others opinions, i would pick the r7's over the 22's based on looks alone. sure, both are pretty obnoxious looking, but the 22's are just way to fat looking for me. the r7's look like a Nascar iron, but they are good irons

you are right, however, i just cant make myself use an ugly club. when i look for an iron set, i pick the irons i like the looks of best, then from there i pick the set of those that i hit the best. i know its not the smartest way to choose an iron, but i just cant play with ugly irons

It matters. We include a whole section on esthetics in our review because it matters.

The reason I got my CG4 Tours over the regular CG4s was because the Tour irons are completely silver, and the regular CG4s have a blue cavity. Looks do matter, IMO.

I don't think the callys are that ugly. For every green I can hit in regulation with them I like them more.

Sure, I would play blades if I could play them, because they look fantastic.

Btw: I think there are not many single-digit handicaps, which like thicker top-lines and more offset in their irons (except rocco in the pro-section ). But for a mid-high handicapper game improvement clubs like the r7 or x-22 can help enjoying the game really.

He doesn't make a fault with either of the two sets he suggested to buy.

edit: smilies...

The looks of both clubs doesn't bother me and I think I hit the fatter clubs better because of some mental aspect makes me think of hitting a wood instead of an iron which is why I love hybrids.

I picked up the R7s earlier this year. I tested them against the X22s and personally for me the TMs felt better for me. Results were also better with the TMs but I wasn't that consistent between both sets, but my gut liked the R7s better.

Results on the course are there. My previous best round last year was low 100s and I shot a 91 2 weeks ago and a 96 this week. I'm happy with them!
