So today I was cleaning out my bag and I found a Top-Flite Spalding ball from back in 1982. I decided to chip with it in the yard and compared it against the Pro v1 and Taylormade TP Red. The ball went much higher then the other two and seemed to shoot off the face.

Anyone ever hit one and know why it even compares to todays balls?

If it's that old, I'm guessing it probably has a wound core making it more lively (for lack of a better word) than a solid core ball.

That was my first thought!

I have no idea . . . I figured a 25 year old golf ball would hit like a rock.

The wound balls back then spun like crazy. We used to use the TopFile Superflights on windy days. On less windy days, I used Titleist DT Wounds. 90's. It's amazing how ball technology has progressed since then.

PS - There was also a great little ball back then called the Acushnet - Club Special. Some kind of Titleist wound ball.

I'm down to a 10 handicap. At this rate, I'll get to scratch at 90 years old!

Rock, sorry Top, Flight made some OK balls but I doubt they ever made wound balls in living memory i.e. 30-40 years. The old Tour Edition was a real breakthrough ball which gave real spin with a non-cut cover; if you ever hit a true balata ball thin you'll realise how good the new covers are in terms of resilience.

I imagine the one you found basically bounces off the clubface without actually gripping it like a ProV1 or similar and therefore flies much higher. I wouldn't mind betting the Top Flight will have minimal spin on it.

Yeah. I don't ever remember a TopFlite wound ball.
