Shaft Help Please

Hi All,

I have put 4 different shafts into my driver head in the past few months. I hit the ball very high and was trying to bring it down a bit. I ended up with a Graffaloy Red Extra Stiff. My swing speed is 107 mph and I ended up really liking the shaft head combo.

That being said I went out to an empty hole the other day to hit about 10 drives with real balls and see how it performed. I was hitting these great mid trajectory draws and they all ended up in the fairway between 275-290. A group rolled up on me right after I hit my last drive and I explained what I was doing. Long story short I was asked to hit one of the guys new drivers with a regular shaft in it. I took a much smoother swing and really tried to make the transition less violent. The first ball I hit with this club ended up landing 30 yards past my best one with my club and rolling another 20. I thought it was a fluke so I hit 2 more with the same result.

Does anyone have any insight into why this happened? Also, does anyone with my swing speed use a regular shaft? It really confused me.

I use a regular flex with a swing speed of 105 give or take. I only got my driver because I needed one for my high school match and figured with golf galaxy's used policy I could return it within 30 days, but so far I have been hitting that regular flex so far and solid I really don't want to anymore.

Well, first off, did the balls with the regular flex shaft have the same dispersion as the ones with the x-flex shaft? And second, with a swing speed of 107, depending on how you load the shaft stiff might be a better bet than x-flex. Also, the type of driver would make a huge difference. But this is still confusing to me either way. Judging by everything I've hit and everything I've been told, those regular flex shots should have been high and way off-center to the point that even if they were longer, you would have no consistency whatsoever. And as for the question about swing speed, your speed doesn't change according to flex, only by length, and less importantly weight.

He said though that the transition was less violent which means that the shaft loaded nicely and because of the extra whip, it propelled the ball a longer way.

If you can control the regular flex shaft, and not have a violent transition then go for one like that.

One other thing. With a 107mph ss, you might want to look a rex-flex shaft is slightly less torque, and try to keep it more on-plane.

Generally, stiffer shafts have better control (accuracy), while softer flexes have a greater dispersion, but greater distance.
