I have seen some discussion on the topic. I just bought a 975D off of ebay for $7.25 to mess around with. I want to try cutting an inch off, but it has a brand new grip on it! I also have a 975J on the way. I am 5'11" if that matters.

Why not just choke up an inch?

why not consider using an air compressor to remove the grip, that will allow you to lop it off and readd the grip without ruining the grip.

In my bag:

some golf clubs

a few golf balls

a bag of tee's some already broken the rest soon to be

a snickers wrapper (if you have seen me play, you would know you are not going anywhere for a while)

and an empty bottle of water

Choke an inch; works pretty well with todays silly long shafts. If you cut the shaft down you'll affect swingweight (may need to add weight to the head to keep it the same) and you can splinter the shaft if you aren't careful.

I figure I'll get a less consistent grip if I choke up.

If I had an air compressor I would have tried. It cost me $7.50 for a new grip and to have the club cut.

couldnt hurt. might even help. for that price if it doesnt work, then no biggie, right?

Exactly what I was thinking!

I doubt you'd notice the difference in swing weight. A lot of people make a big deal of the swing weight change even though the manufacturing tolerances of golf clubs nowaday aren't very tight. You can have a slightly different swing weight in each and every one of your irons from the same set and not know it.

In short, just chop it off. I bet you're going to hit it better with the shorter shaft.

Shove the air nozzle into the hole at the butt of the grip. What you're trying to do is inflate the grip just enough to slide it out. Unfortunately the grip will never inflate uniformly so you're pretty likely to ruin it. Most people slide a pipe or tube over the grip to prevent the grip from over inflating at any given point. Personally I always throw away the old grip and put on a new one. Not worth the hassle of trying to save the old grip.

I just had them throw a new grip on anyway. It only cost $7.50 for it all.

I can't post youtube links, but if you youtube search for it, there are companies that have posted videos on how to do it.

I recommend using a piece of PVC as a protector. I actually don't use grip tape when I install grips with compressed air. I just use masking tape. The masking tape gives you the extra thickness and the grips do not move. It also means no sticky residue that would cause the grip to not remove cleanly.

    • Can be out and up a little more. Not quite over-done yet.
    • Down the line and face on from today. Still feeling like I’m sticking the club into a hole in the ceiling above my right shoulder and then big loop inside to start downswing. That’s how it feels. Not how it looks though! Gotta keep working on this for a bit but I see a lot of progress. 😁
    • Day 5 (13 Mar 26) - Friday shootout cancelled- made it a practice round working from mixed tees. Plenty of up and down work around greens.  Best was a hole out birdie on the par 3 #5 hole - nice pitch and roll w/Pw from about 10yds off the green - dead center flagstick drop.  Much of round was focused on getting solid weight shift into lead foot.
    • Day 208 3-13 Worked on wrist arching and flow. First time hitting reall balls at a range in months. It was nice to see ball flight. Still not sure it beats my backyard practice station.
    • Three hole match - microphones on in the cart. It's fascinating listening to them talk about their shots and how they play them. I'm not normally a huge fan of the TM videos - they seem forced to me - but this one doesn't. It's also fun seeing their competitiveness over what on the face of it is a fairly meaningless 3 holes, but they can't help themselves.
