Hi, and pardon the lengthy post.

I am a slow swinger, about 80 mph, who decided to move from a 10.5 * Tour Edge driver to a 13.5* Ping G10 draw both at 44 inches and A flex, based on reading a lot of Tom Wishon's books, and wanting to get a few more yards via optimal launch conditionds. I am unable to access a launch monitor, as there are none anywhere within 2 days driver of here.

Anyway the TE driver used to get me about 180 yds total on average with a fairly low trajectory. The Ping is a rocket launcher giving me about 160 with no roll. I can't handle losing 20 yards off my drives. I think I am hitting down on the ball, and will attempt to remedy this.

I was wondering if reshafting the Ping with a PL red 62 grams with an R flex might make sense, or maybe the UST Proforce V2 65 gram in R flex (these two are options from the Pingwrx shop). I really wan't to keep the Ping in my bag as it was a gift from the kids

I have a similar swing speed (mid 80's to low 90's) and play the same Tour Edge Exotics driver as you. I also experimented earlier in the year with a 12º driver. I had similar results to yours. The 12º driver launched the ball too high with too much backspin and I lost close to 20 yds. of distance as well.

Reshafting the Ping won't help much as about 80% of your launch angle/backspin comes purely from the loft of the club.

What I found with the Exotics is that it really likes to be hit above the centerline. Try teeing the ball a little higher (and possibly a little further forward in your stance) until you are striking the ball about 3/8" to 1/2" above the centerline of the face. You get the advantages of the higher loft on the upper portion of the face but also lower spin. The first time you make contact this way you will be amazed -- I literally added 30 yds. consistently to my drives like this, plus I am now getting some rollout as well.

Hitting center face drives I was getting 200 yards or so and now I'm regularly seeing 235-240 yds.

    • With the hot weather……I’ll take a Gatorade please.
    • 60 minutes on the local school playing fields, trying to discover my former grip,I found it and used a lob wedge with which I was able to group 3 balls pretty near together, very happy to have found my old grip and its give me a lot more confidence so I can go have a round of golf with my brother and his step sons,I have not stepped on a course for 20 years, still I can hit my old yardages and that's great as I'm now 62...everybody have a great day
    • I have this issue as well. I play in a bi-weekly league and I generally work on my drills and feels as I'm playing in the league...lol. But to be honest, they really do not affect me in a bad way too much. If anything, my irons are actually more crisp.  The issue comes in when I transition to the woods....so I try to find a happy medium there for the time being. But as far as bad shots go, they are no worse than they were before worrying about drills and what not.  Just speaking for my experience, obviously.
    • Another good episode. I below its a skill to be able to find a functional swing between where you were and where you want to be. I am guilty of trying to do too much on the course instead of just playing.  The goal is to play golf better. Not turn a round of golf into a practice session.
    • SUMMER HAS ARRIVED!!! Just in time for this golf outing.
