I keep going back and forth on whether or not I should buy a new set of irons or not. This is my third season of golf and I am currently a 17 handicap and hopefully will be lower soon. I have started to shoot in the mid to lower eighties the last few rounds and feel that I can keep shooting there but my handicap just hasn't lowered yet.

I am using a cheap Dunlop set (200 bucks) I bought when I first started and they really aren't in bad shape. The grooves seem to have a lot of nicks in them but the main problem I have with them are the grips are starting to go bad. Originally I had a plan to not buy a good fitted set until I started shooting in the 80's consistently which started happening at the end of last season so I changed my goal to until I was a single digit handicap. I feel I need to replace the grips on these clubs but hate to put any money into these cheap set of clubs because I feel that by the end of next season I should be hovering around that single digit handicap.

So that's my dilemma. I was looking into buying a good mid level set from Adams or Titleist (wanted to stay under 600 if possible) and actually get them fitted to me like suggested.

What do you guys think? Should I just stick with my Dunlop irons and get them replace the grips to hang onto them for another couple of seasons or just go ahead and get a new set. How much do you think it would cost to get them re-gripped with Winn grips? Thanks for your help.

grips are a pretty easy weekend project if you are the slightest bit handy. All you need are a utility knife and some mineral spirits.

Depends on what grips you go with, but I found some clearance ones I liked and did my entire set 3-PW and driver for $25 and 3 hours on a winter sunday.

it's generally an easy task to regrip -- no doubt about it......... but just keep in mind that in my experience, "cheap" clubs are a freaking pain to regrip.

It took me longer to get tape residue off my slazenger 3 wood than it did for me to do my whole TP iron set.

my vote's for a new set :)

If you have it in your budget to get custom fit for a new set of top tier irons, do it. Regripping won't make a bad club better. Winn grips will run you $8 to $10 per club, maybe more if you have them done by the local shop. The Adams A3 OS or Titleist AP1 irons are great options. The AP1s are more of a traditional looking set with added forgiveness, and the Adams are more of a game improvement set that will help you get the ball in the air with the heavy perimeter weighting and hybrid long irons. Go for it - Upgrade!

I would suggest new irons, see if there is a demo days in your area and try as many as possible.

I would say just get new clubs. When I started I had a cheaper set. I got to be pretty good with those clubs, but the bottoms were getting all scrapped up. The grooves were still pretty good but the metal was proabley softer or something. Anyway when I got a used set of titliest DCIs I couldn't believe the difference (it might be my old shafts were graphite). Your shots well be more consistant with a better set of clubs. I would go for a new set because it will cost you proably atleast $45 to regrip even if you do it yourself.

My suggestion would be to find a gently used set that appeals to you. If you can get a used set for around $300-$400 then you could spend the other money and take a few lessons to get you over the hump. You might find that in a couple of years when you are better, you will want something different anyway. At least with a used set you won't put as much money into it right now, only to maybe want something different down the road.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

    • I am currently playing a Cobra Ltdx LS 9 degree driver and Cobra Ltdx LS FW3. Both with Tensei White stock stiff shafts and original weights of 12g (heel) and 3g (toe). My miss is usually a pull fade or sometimes a slice, swing is out to in. Driver swing speed about 112 mph. Grips are stock regular. Intended change: Driver: Switching to Tensei White x-flex one inch shorter which I suppose would be 44,5? Changing heel weight to 18g. Changing grip to Golf Pride Z-grip cord midsize. Change hosel setting to standard draw. FW3: Changing heel weight to 16g (apparently not available in FW weights, but supposed to be something called "internal weight" a club builder can add which fits between the weight and the screw?). Change grip to Golf Pride Z-grip cord midsize. Changing hosel setting to standard +1. The goal is to 1) get better grip since I tend so lose grip in warm and moist conditions with the current grips and 2) mitigate the misses to start more straight with less side spin. Also considering adding the Cobra Ltdx LS FW5 instead of my old Taylormade R9 and getting 14g heel and 6g toe weights with the same grip as the others and hosel setting standard +1.   All of the above is based on conversations with ChatGPT and, as everyone knows, it can come up with pretty much whatever but I spent a few hours asking about different perspectives etc and this was the recommendation. So, my question is basically, does it make any sense?   Thanks.
