My question is: which side of the cartpath do you take relief on?

I've always thought it was "not nearer to the hole, but I had a strange situation today. I was on a cart path on the right of the fairway, but the path was very straight and it was "aiming" directly at the hole. To drop with the spot my ball came to rest between myself and the hole would mean walking back 50 yards. If i drop the ball left of the path (nearer the fairway) I would have a decent shot on the green. Dropping on the right would put me in a spot with an overhanging tree. Whats correct?

What's the 50 yards thing have to do with it. I'm not sure why that's even mentioned.

You find the nearest point of relief no nearer to the hole. You don't get to go back on the line from the hole to the spot where your ball was. If the nearest spot is right or left, you go right or left. That includes your stance, so oftentimes for a righty the nearest spot is to the left.

If it puts you under a tree, so be it.

^^^^What he said.^^^^

Or you say "F" it, and hit it off the path, you get better spin than you think...and you wont hit it fat!

Hopefully I will not sound like an idiot....but it is NEAREST point of relief, and one club length...right? Must take full relief (does not include pissing behind a tree).

Yes, but obviously you have to determine the nearest point - left or right - then take your drop within one clublength of that. You don't determine your "nearest point plus a clublength," then choose which side to drop on. The side you drop on, unless the points are exactly equidistant, is not something you get to choose.

Excellent, I have indeed been following the rules of golf.

And I have been correct when notifying my playing partners, It's nearest point of relief....NOT BEST POINT OF RELIEF!
