I'm trying to decide what irons I want to go with. I don't have access to a nice pro shop where I can try out the irons first. I regularly shoot over 100 and am just looking for a forgiving iron. My swing is decent, but I haven't been playing for very long. I want a heavier iron that will help me when I hit it fat.

Right now I am using a blade iron set that a friend of mine gave me. Its made by KZG which I assume is an off-brand. I can hit my unbranded SW about 100 yards and very high, but I hit my PW a lot lower - the ball still goes 120+ yds, but the trajectory is low. I'm going to try moving the ball up in my stance more. My 4-5 irons go anywhere from 150 to 200+ yards and low - my hits never feel too solid with these. My 7 iron is smooth and travels with good loft and about 165 yds... my 6 iron goes slightly shorter than my 7 a lot of the time.

There is a 3-PW set of Callaway Big Bertha Fusion irons that are used and for sell for $250 (the guy said he would do $225 because they have been there for so long) at a municipal course near me. They are in decent condition, which is fine with me. I don't care if the clubs sparkle, because I know they will get scratched up eventually.

There are also a couple sets of new Mizuno MX-950 irons on eBay for about $320. I'm a little bit skeptical, because I don't want fake clubs. The MX-950s sound like a really forgiving iron though and could get me some brand new clubs for $100 more than the Callaways. I also think Mizuno is more my personality than Callaway... not that it really matters.

I've felt these clubs in stores and they both feel much nicer... they are heavier than my KZG's and I really like that.

I'm not sure what flex my current irons are. My driver is a Callaway ERC Fusion with the stock shaft and the flex is "Firm". I'm not sure if this is the same as stiff - can someone clarify? I can land my driver straight and at about 280 yds with roll on a good swing, but I slice it or push it a lot. I'm a scrawny guy, so thats probably near my maximum for swing speed/distance. I would think that stiff shafts would be best for me, because I am young and swing pretty hard. Would these be right? Should I go steel or graphite shafts? I've felt both and the graphite shafts don't seem that much lighter. My current irons are steel.

What iron set should I go with and am I taking a big risk buying the Mizunos off eBay? Here is a link to one I am watching - http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-RH-SET-OF-MI...3A1%7C294%3A50

My vote is for the Fusions. Great feel, very forgiving, sets up nice and not too much offset. I can draw the ball with these or hit them dead straight, but can't seem to fade them. My setup is -3/4" and 2* flat. My distance with the PW is about 120. $225 is a great price and I would go for it if they come with the steel uniflex. If you get them and don't like them, you can probably flip them on Ebay and still make a small profit. In that sense it can't hurt, but I'm pretty sure you're going to keep them.

Would the uniflex shafts flex too much for me? Should I look into stiffs? Is it safe for me to assume that I have the same swing speed as someone who hits the PW the same distance as me?

KZG is a nice brand of clubs and by no means offbrand, but not for a new person, I think the mizunos are the best for you

Ahh. I see what you are saying. I don't know why I never looked them up. They actually seem to be nice irons from what everybody says. They are the KZG Cavity Back I think - I'm pretty sure this is them -

http://www.golfreview.com/cat/irons/...5_2940crx.aspx I've been thinking I should replace them, because they aren't good. If this isn't the case, should I? They are definitely for a player better than me, but is it worth it to switch to a more forgiving club? Should I just suck it up and learn to love them?

I was in the same boat as you back in March--had just started back playing after a 10+ year layoff and was regularly shooting around 110. Decided to splurge on a new non-2009 bag and ultimately settled on the MX-950s (4-GW), bought off of ebay (different seller). Have never been happier--now hovering around 95-105 most rounds, and hopefully falling further. The MX 950s are reasonably forgiving but do not feel as clunky as some others I tried. I would note, however, that for whatever it's worth the MX-950s came in fairly low on the Maltby game improvement index for 2008, far behind, say, the Ping G10s or Cally X-20s (did not try the Big Berthas, sorry).

The best part, IMHO, is that the set is progressive, with the 8-9i and wedges being pretty soft, responsive clubs for this level of game improvement and not nearly as shovel-like as some others I tried; the wedges compare respectably with my Cleveland CG14s (which many on this forum would say are nothing special, but I'm a hack). I will say that the Mizunos seemed to have less distance than some others I tried, but distance is much less of a problem for me than accuracy.

Good luck with your decision, and have fun!

The clubs are at a local course? Just hit them and see what you think. If you hit them good, buy them. Easy enough if you ask me. Put some new grips on them and enjoy.

A couple of years ago I was trying to decide between MX900s and Fusions (and a few others). In the end, the Mizunos just felt so much better than the others that it really wasn't a hard decision for me. I have heard good things about that ebay seller so you would probably be fine, but these days counterfeits are so good that sometimes legit sellers can't tell the difference.

you can't go wrong with either. for my money, i'd go with the mizuno for the simple reason that you could probably play with them for a very long time i.e. until you get down to the low teens in hcap. once you are regularly shooting high 80s or low 90s (or around 18-20 hcap) you'd be changing out of the Fusion.

also, the mizuno is forged, and hence should feel better than the Fusion.

    • It's miles better, though.
    • Went up to Erie for a lesson. I still need to work on how I shift my weight into my right leg and turn into the right leg. I extend it too much and externally rotate it too much. That all causes me to over rotate the hips and cause weight shift issues in the downswing. I need to feel like my right leg gains flex (it doesn’t), and my knee cap faces forward. The right hip sinks back and right. I need a need a ton more internal rotation. I still have some right elbow issues in the backswing. The path is better, but too much right elbow bend. I need to maintain width in the right elbow and let my right shoulder retract more, let’s say at A3, which helps keep that right arm extended.
    • Day 130 12-20 Today was just swinging what i had and go from there. Did focus on getting to lead side. Recorded swings for lesson  and hit real balls.
    • Day 1 - 2025-12-20 Starting a new streak, of at least 1. With rain dumping for the next week in the north bay area, I'll be a lot of outdoor net work and maybe some putting. About 10 minutes of 7 iron work, focused on the usuals: weight transfer, keeping hands behind me. I'll have more time in the coming days for video review and maybe some Hack Motion.
